Typically I’ll stick to something basic. For example: off Monday, Tuesday speedwork intervals, Wednesday easy run, Thursday tempo, off Friday, Saturday or Sunday would be a long run. I have been averging 25,30,35 miles per week depending on what I have to look forward to race wise with that schedule above. I of course alternate the days if need be. I don’t have a set work schedule so I do have to adapt most of the time.

I haven’t been good about doing my “workout” runs regularly this past month. I’m starting back this week on a better regimen. That and increasing my mileage weekly instead of staying around the same.

My throat hurts, runny nose, watery eyes, general blah for me today. I’m going to try to sweat some of it out today on the trails.

Got a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 2’s I’m dying to try out.

When is your first marathon or ultra? I would say your schedule should be to maintain or achieve the proper mileage base for your race and working on core/strength/cross training where you can. I wouldn’t worry about speed, fartlek, tempo, or progression runs too much unless you are trying to get in peek racing shape, which I don't think would make sense. Maybe add some road races to break up the mileage, but that should be your main focus, especially if you are going to get into racing beyond a marathon.

Personally, I’m trying to lessing my time on my 5k’s while also building more miles to go longer. No matter what mixing it up, for me, keeps it fun/less monotonous. I’m probably going to sub some interval work tomorrow for some hill repeats on a new hill I found out about.

Don't feel like doing anything for NYE this year so figured out on New Year's Day it is possible to to do my local parkrun in Highbury at 9am and then race to get onto the tube to get to Southwark Park to do their parkrun at 10.30. Sounds like my kind of way to start 2018.

I’m doing a midnight 5k(for fun) with my local club on New Years. Snacks afterwards.

My knee has been giving me problems and googling it tells me it’s my IT Band(runners knee). I may stick to the bike and pool the next couple of days and work on stretching it properly and foam rolling. At least that’s what people on YouTube suggest........

i had it band issues for years. stay off it and roll/stretch the crap out of it. once it gets worse its hard to get rid of.

also you can look into astym(sp?). its usually done by a physical therapist but i would do it to myself with a spoon and cocoa butter lol

Thanks for the tips. It hasn’t been too bad and really just started getting worse recently so I feel I’ll get ahead of it if I treat it right.

This is hot garbage I tell you. If it’s not one thing it’s another.....

I ran into IT band issues a couple years back while training for my first half marathon. I was on my final run before the big day and it felt like someone stabbed me in the knee.

Thankfully the race was postponed due to crazy weather so I had a week to recover and get treatment. The foam roller became my best friend and I was able to finish the race, although the final 3 miles hurt like hell.

Since then I’ve made stretching and exercising it a major point of my normal exercise routine, and I haven’t had any issues since.

Good luck with it! It’s no fun, but some added focus on bringing it up to speed should hopefully prevent any issues in the future.

So I managed to go and do 2 different parkruns this morning. I went to my usual one at 9am and got 24.19. I then got 23.51 for the second one, an hour and a train ride later. Nice surprise to be faster for the second one, hard to know why that was because it's not like I didn't put effort into the first one! I think maybe because it was a new park and only 3 laps, whereas my usual parkrun is 5 laps which is pretty boring. Also I'm just not an early morning person so maybe I needed a bit of waking up! Anyway, I'm really glad I stayed in last night as this was a great way to start the new year.

After finally kicking off the New Year with 9 miles on Wednesday, I did my first weekend long run this morning covering 14 miles. It’s been stupid cold here (11°F/-12°C Wed, 9°F/-13°C today) so it’s been hard to get out there consistently. I have treadmills in my building but man do I hate those things with a fiery passion.

Haven’t run in like a month after hurting my foot. Haven’t been super keen to get back out there even after my foot started feeling better because it’s been like no higher than 5 degrees here for two weeks. Tomorrow should be in the 20s, so I’m going to give it a go then

So i just got back from my Podiatrist and it turns out I have Morton's Neuroma which is a real bummer, because the only 'cure' is either removing the nerve via surgery or a series of injections. My podiatrist told me to try insert pads first to soften the blow on the ball of my foot while running/playing basketball, so he molded my feet to personalize the insert so it's custom made. No clue how long it takes to get it back. He didn't really give me a clear idea as to how long it takes.

If the insert pad doesn't work (which he said to give it a month or two) then I'm on to the injections and worst case scenario surgery to remove the nerve.

    Anyone else deal with this?

I have a half marathon lined up for Saturday I signed up for awhile back before my ITB issues. Been nursing it since; strength training the muscles around/connected to it with resistant bands a few times a week and some other exercises, core workouts(not enough though), swimming, elliptical, foam rolling, biking...... not running. Taking cues from @bedwettingcosmo basically. My base is good I think, but not sure if I should go out and do the 1/2 if I haven't actually ran in 2 or so weeks. At least there is a 1/4 option and I may just have to do that. The cool kids are doing the 1/2 and the old folks are doing the 1/4 haha. It was a $15 sign up and no medals so it's whatev.

Thing is, I can still run/play bball (and still do) it's just a minor (to sometimes major) annoyance. Been reading up a lot about it. For many, the inserts have worked and they never looked back. Many others chose to do the injections and the pain went away for good. Read a few horror stories that nothing worked. From everything I read, surgery is a huge risk. Even read a podiatrist column on how he won't even do the surgery because of scar tissue risk and healing risks (something my own podiatrist mentioned).

Just got a call from my DR saying my inserts won't be ready for 2-3 weeks. So I'll probably calm it down a little until I get them.
