But then they elaborate. The whole point of the video is: "It doesn't work for us, and here's why"

Yeah, seriously. $450 million global launch says that it more than likely...worked.

46 minutes seems excessive. Is there a Cliffs Notes version?

  4. actually quality by popularity is a fallacy ;)

  5. they didn't think the jokes were funny or fit the tone, they thought all the sub-plots were messy, they didn't like Laura Dern's character, they didn't like luke, too much island stuff etc. etc.

I dont think the movie "didnt work" but a Star Wars or equivalent films opening box office earnings isnt exactly an indicator of quality. Its one of the most hyped films of all time.

Or just that it's more than likely...a Star Wars movie.

I love the people who say its a marvel movie in the star wars universe... like NO

    Just a friendly reminder

No one has been able to explain to me why they didn't like how Luke was handled in a way that doesn't just make them seem like a bummed out fanboy who's head-canon has been compromised.

  10. "but they built that moment up in TFA"

    yes and? that's your expectation.

that's like getting rejected by a girl and going "but i worked so hard to ask you out".

I think the best argument is, we aren't really shown how did Luke go from a composed jedi knight willing to die to turn his father to the good side to wanting to kill his nephew for possibly switching. My only thought for this argument is that the force had shown him so clearly that Ben was destined for the dark side, his whole life being manipulated by Snoke, he would have gone dark with or without Luke doing what he did.

Came in this thread to see other people’s thoughts since opening night. I am surprised (but kind of not) with the amount of positivity in this thread. The more I think about the movie or discuss it with people I know I get more disappointed in it.

  13. so the guy who chopped his father's hand off before eventually killing him, made out with his sister, gets super powerful, fucks up his sister's (and best friend's) son is not going to snap for like a split second?
After all he did come to his senses.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

I could see this in my friends as well when they talk about it, but me, another friend of mine and others in this thread have said the opposite. The more I talk about this movie the more I love it personally.

he definitely could snap, I wish they did a better job of explaining what he saw and showing exactly why he felt what must be done. I mean I'm good with how they did it, but this is the argument thats been used against it that sort of works IMO.

  16. I feel like this "my weirdly specific question hasn't been answered" is such a weird criticism to levy against part 2 of a trilogy.

It’s a moment of weakness, but one that comes with severe consequences.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

I personally dont. Not every question has to be asnwered and if it was these movies would be forever. You get the point. What he saw was that he turned, killed poeple, and caused pain and suffering. That should be enough IMO.

  19. also, Snoke literally connected Rey and Ben through lightyears, so the arguably most powerful Jedi in the universe knowing that his nephew is fucked up for good isn't that far fetched.

These are my thoughts as well. The people that talk about “the same guy that wouldn’t kill Vader” seem to forget for a second there he went ape shit crazy on him before coming to his senses.

“Coming to his senses”, sounds like the same guy to me.

I want to enjoy it more than I did but so much of the movie just didn’t move me. Sucks, but I hope it’s just a slight misstep for me.

Yup exactly. What I saw is that Luke has never really been a "pure" Jedi in the first place (and Rey won't be either). I hate to go back to the prequels, but those movies show how early Jedi training begins, and how many years of heavily mentored training typically occur before the wielder actually becomes a Jedi Knight. Luke and Rey did not have that. Therefore, even though Luke was "the last remaining Jedi" and brought balance by turning/ending Vader, he didn't necessarily become a Yoda-like pure master, and is still extremely flawed as a Jedi (which is probably additionally emphasized by his lack of activity since the new "class" of Jedi).

  23. it's perfectly okay not to enjoy this movie. it was weird, and especially weird for a Star Wars movie.

Anyway I liked the movie a lot, it had its flaws but really every Star Wars movie does, it's not worth sweating about to me haha it was still wonderful

If I could just forget it

I wish Finn would have died. I think it would have been a great redemption story to have him sacrifice himself for something greater after selfishly trying to run away again. In fact while that sequence was happening I was getting emotional thinking about it happening. Damn.
