Listening to Sleep Well Beast for the first time. Not sure yet if I like this band though

 

Was going to hold my tongue but, eh. basically there are two Nolan camps that frustrate me, the people who think he is the second coming of Christ when it comes to filmmaking, and the people who think he’s absolute trash and will hate on anything he’s done. Personally, I just think he’s a good blockbuster director. Inception, for example, is a fun movie, and that’s about it. But that’s totally fine, I don’t think it’s trying to be anything more than that, yet some people pretend it’s this super heady film and it’s just not. The dude knows how to direct a scene and is so good on a technical level. Where he fails for me is characters and story. I haven’t seen it in awhile, but I fucking loved The Dark Knight. I found Dunkirk to be one of the most boring films I’ve sat through in a very long time. Sue me.

With that said, there are more Nolan movies I dislike or am very indifferent on than movies I like. Just da way it is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Haha, yeah. That movie...I really wanted to love it. The more I started talking about it though, the more issues I had with it :/

Look all I know is, Nolan has generally put out great shit. You shouldn't worry about what a contingent of his fans say and do. I'm sure plenty of directors, like other entertainers, have overexcited fanbases that are hyperbolic about just how amazing they are. But if makes y'all feel better, I'll concede he's not the messiah his superfans - or IMDB - says he is

 

Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar were SO bad though

I only worry because it’s frustrating when I voice an opinion about a movie and the people that worship him act as if I’m a fool for thinking negatively about one of his movies. Like, I haven’t seen it, but let’s say I didn’t enjoy Three Billboards. I would feel very comfortable expressing that opinion in the Three Billboards thread. I would not have that same level of comfortability expressing negative thoughts about a Nolan movie in one of his threads. Or even like Paul Thomas Anderson. I love him to death, probably my favorite American filmmaker. I could be wrong, but if I didn’t like Phantom Thread, I don’t think I’d get attacked for it by posting about it in the official thread.

 

I really hate TDKR.

 

my problem with the Nolan Batman movies is that they're too serious, I know people think the Marvel movies aren't serious enough so you can't please everyone, I just think there's an inherent ridiculousness to a man dressing up like a bat and enacting vigilante justice

 

I liked Anne Hathaway in TDKR. Don't have a strong opinion for it against the movie as a whole. Interstellar I need to see again

 

That's totally fair and I can't say I don't see that as well. But I've also caught some people going in more or less the exact opposite extreme, speaking ill of those who think Nolan's films are great and acting with the air that they're always the ones who are "right". Yet the ones who enjoy his films still get stigmatized. I'm not saying that occurs as frequently as what you brought up but it peeves me a bit to see certain things get left at the door

Like, me saying I think most of his films are great will likely get me side-eyed by someone reading the thread like I'M the one who's uncultured or some shit

Yeah, that's true. It's definitely interesting that he's become such a divisive director for some reason.

 

Plus that Batman voice. Like at least they made it voice modulation in the new DC movies.

 

I felt significantly irresponsible going to watch the trillion dollar budgeted Star Wars this weekend.

 

Glad we see eye to eye here. And like I think I said to you before, don't sweat not liking Dunkirk or Baby Driver or whatever. It happens
