One I’ve seen consistently come up is animal rights. But the way it was portrayed was consistent with the whole “setting captives free” thing which has been around since Quigon bought Anakin to set him free.

 

Animal rights is a political issue? Or a contentious one? I did see a vegan tattoo artist I follow post that it touches on animal rights and cruelty and thought to myself "that's a stretch"

I can't see disagreeing with that plot point. The children and the animals were being abused so a victim of that would naturally want to put an end to it in some way.

I will say that storyline was the weakest part of the movie. Rose was great though. Maybe they'll flesh it out better in the books
