I don't hate what Rotten Tomatoes is doing, I hate how, even with the site having been around for years, it still seems like a majority of the general public still somehow has no idea how it works or what the score means. I still maintain that a review aggregator that deals with the binary "liked/did not like" distinction is valuable in a climate where letter/number review scores are becoming increasingly arbitrary and irrelevant.

People who are trying to convince themselves Rey's parents are of importance kind of remind me of BN fans not convinced SF was the last album.

  4. People get really worked up with their fan theories. I liked the take earlier about why that left some people super mad. They spent two years head cannoning a movie and thinking they were super smart. Heh.

RT is garbage so I think it’s hilarious that people are trying to torpedo the score out of childish spite

I know Kylo was trying to manipulate her when he made the parents comment, but A) it looked like when she searched her feelings in the moment she knew it was true, and B) it's so much more narratively satisfying that her parents were nobodies.

You're gonna tell me you had:

    Laura Dern
    Gwendolyn Christie
    and Domnhall Gleeson

and your writers couldn't get me to care about A SINGLE ONE OF THEIR RESPECTIVE CHARACTERS????

time to get new writers on these things. Start fresh.

Are people implying that people are just saying they don't like the movie to tank scores? I'm sure that is partly true, but if I were adding a score to an aggregate site, I'm probably float this movie around a 5 or 6. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that a lot of others feel that way.

  11. I mean, people are actually brigading the scores, you can see them talking about it on a variety of the troll film forums ... fake accounts spamming zero scores.

Agreed Greg. My intial interpretation is the line of reys being a lineage of her history and where it leads. Those tally marks on the At-At day after day and the pain waiting for them. Where does all that suffering and waiting lead to? Nowhere. because it doesnt matter. All she has is herself.

Mostly where that take came from was my own personal feelings, but my feelings were kind of confirmed when, after the screening, my one friend who is a huge Star Wars fan kept trying to explain why he disliked the movie and no matter what I said just kept circling back to, essentially, "Well, it's not how I thought it would go" as his only reason.

Yeah, I don't have any fan theories and I certainly don't think I'm super smart; but when a series clearly prides itself on misdirection I'm certainly not going to immediately believe what I'm told by a misguided character during a scene in which he is trying to elicit the response he wants from another character.

Enjoyed it way more on round 2, as expected. Still has some issues and I put it a little under both TFA and R1 right now but a worthy addition.

  19. Not caring about Holdo, I can't imagine having that opinion. Her taking the ship back, us realizing she had a plan, and then ultimate sacrifice/death was one of the best moments in the film.

I feel like it's going to be a little jarring going back to JJ's gee-whiz adventure romp style after how incredibly weird and dark this one was. Like, I really enjoy most of JJ's films and love TFA, but the feel of this one really did it for me in a more satisfying way than TFA did. At the very least, though, it's going to be another impeccably-made film by a director with a clear vision for what blockbuster films should be.
