I’m kinda bummed that Kylo is still part of the First Order. He is one of the best parts of the new films and I really liked where he was heading in this film. I would have preferred if he distanced himself from the First Order (like he said he wanted to do) and just started his own thing that isn’t connected to either side. Kylo and Rey would make a killer team. Now he is just going to be the villain of IX.

Through the roof. Despite the gripes, I think people can at least agree with the creativity he displayed both as a director and a writer. Id love to see what hed do with his own blank canvas. He was working with somebody elses characters and furthering somebody elses story. I think he at the very least showed he deserves to create his own characters and story.

    You?

Where are the Knights of Ren. That the only thing I wanted out of this film. Wasn't that a thing?

I wouldn’t say “excited”, but I’m glad I know what Rian Johnson’s trilogy may feel like. Hopefully some of the absurd stuff in this film won’t feel so absurd in his own trilogy.

eh. I feel like he kind of did in way since Snoke is dead and hes esentially the new Supreme Leader of the First Order. He showed Hux is below him. Now he has an army and a pre-established system to use and mold in his image. How else would he conquer the universe, start the ground up? [/spoiler/

Ecstatic, I'm stoked for Solo and IX, but I'm gonna be chomping at the bit for info about that new trilogy.

I was looking for that during the flashback to him destroyed Lukes school. Keep in mind. He didnt have the helmet/look of Kylo Ren when he took over probs since it was out of the blue that Luke was going to kill him in the middle of the night

I think that vision of the knights of ren could potentially not be from thte past but the future and well see it in ep.9. Keep in Mind the knight were JJ's writing and hes finishing. And Kylo needs some loyal soldiers

Same but whats interesting is that the ending of this movie seems like the start of a story with a new character (Force broom kid). It would be weird i think to end this trilogy with the start of a new character arc in a new movie.

Maybe that kid isnt in 9 and really just an intro to the first character of Rians new trilogy?

Why does the kid have to be anything? He's just a symbol of keeping hope alive via positivity.

I totally saw that as a generic "have hope" scene that I don't see having any impact on any later movies. Just a feel good moment. idk

True. Looking into it too much. think seeing him use the force to get the broom and with little force users shown left thats where my mind went

I really enjoyed this and I'm going to go see it again on Sunday. It has its flaws - but nothing like the prequels. It didn't feel like two and a half hours to me. It went by super quick and then I took the longest pee. More thoughts after Sunday.

Loved Kylo and Rey coming together. That fight scene was bad ass.

Luke’s new force power. His see ya around kid was a highlight. Felt like a nice mirror of Han to Luke. Really liked seeing the uncle nephew relationship.

Yoda’s Force ghost. Felt very ESB/ROTJ Yoda and I liked the connection of having the force ghost. He was definitely the best character to use for that.

Poe wrecking the ship at the beginning.

Snoke’s death. Particularly that he was so powerful that he was able to read Kylo’s mind thought for thought, but so prideful he didn’t see it coming.

    Holdo’s wrecking of Snoke’s ship.

The explanation of Luke driving Kylo to the dark side. What a fucking tragedy. I had a hard time understand why Luke would just leave because his temple was destroyed. Totally makes sense now.

This movie really had me believing it’s bullshit all the way through. I TOTALLY thought Holdo was crazy and Poe needed to take charge. I thought Rey and Kylo were about to team up (dark/light/grey) somehow. Totally thought Luke was about to sacrifice himself at Crait (just that he was there period I guess). Assumed Finn and Rose’s plan would work. Probably a bunch of other shit I’m forgetting.

As far as what I didn’t like. I really want to watch again. It was a lot to take in arguably more than any other Star Wars film. I felt like there was a load of info being dumped at all times. The initial Hux/Poe dialogue was a little weird. I get it, just didn’t “feel” Star Wars. It felt almost like Hux was a parody character. This is super picky, but I didn’t like on Canto Bight they called it a “town” and they had “police”. I don’t recall ever hearing places in Star Wars called towns (at least in films). Idk, weird of me I guess. I really liked seeing Leia use the force and didnt want her performance cut but yea, her going Superman was a tad strange. Probably some other stuff, but I really wanna let the film sink in and catch another showing or two.

Overall I thought it a positive experience.

Edit: also loved that Luke was a new hope at the end. Obviously because he wasn’t there he didn’t in fact find a way in, but he gave Poe and crew the hope of finding a way out. It gave the rebellion a chance to live again and I felt like it circled back to Luke’s beginning.

I think Luke Skywalker showed more of Mark Hamill's personality than any other movie so far.

Also as much as I loved Snokes death, I did just love his character in general and am a little bummed that we cant truly see him use his powers in a battle or something. I thought he really was intimidating and menacing, and got to see how strong he was, but we still didnt get any of his motivations and I wouldve loved to see him more and to use his powers in a battle.

I was really hoping for a Luke vs. Snoke master of space wizards with less of a light saber thing and more of Dumbledore vs. Voldemort or Yyoda vs. Palpatine. aaaaaaaaaand both are dead as fuuuhhh

The cut to Luke sitting cross legged floating when he was force projecting was such the "price of admission" shot for me. Such a high. Wish there wasn't as low of a low as Leia force pulling herself back into the ship from space.

That's what really bugs me about this. The fact that all Ren was in Force Awakens was an untrained, angry kid, and in ways is still that. Yet he blindsides Snoke completely, killing him, and now runs the first order? In the moment I thought that entire sequence was awesome, but now I'm a little concerned for how menacing Kylo/the first order is going to feel in the conclusion.

Just curious for you and others opinions on why that was so bad. Was it just the look or the concept of it. Conceptually I thought it was great to see Leia finally use the force when she needed it and it made sense for the story and you know. for her to survive. I was thinking in the moment I would be so disappointed if she died like that. I get humans would explode in space but science is notoriously not a big priority in Star Wars.

I will admit it did just look odd, but it didnt bother me and Id rather her live and have the great moments with Leia and Carrie one last time opposed to her dying quick out of the blue. like that.

I agree with the concern going forward with the First Order. It just seems weird.

as far as Kylo goes, I didnt fully grasp it but Luke talked about how special and how abnormally powerful Rey and Kylo were. he noticed it in both of them. AT first I thought Kylo and Rey were going to be revealed as like some kind of physically representations of the light and dark side which is why they could talk telepathetically to eachother.

But Kylo isnt untrained. He was trained by Luke Skywalker for presumably a long time. Weve seen him stop a blaster bolt. Weve seen him be able to use the force to go into peoples minds. things weve never seen. He was untrained to Snoke probably just mentally and handing the dark side aspect of the force.

Also Rey and Kylo breaking the saber was sweet. The projected luke on Crait was holding that lightsaber and I was confused why he ahd a blue saber but forgot once Luke started being a badass and it took me till after the movie to think back and be like oh shit that was a clue it wasnt the real thing

My prediction is Rey uses the kyber crystal from that saber (which she still has) and puts into a new one. The one from thats in her staff. boom

I will say that one of my least favorite things about the movie and retrospectively The Force Awakens is that Rey still has had no training. Luke didnt really even train her other than teaching her about the force. And yet she was able to do about as well as Kylo with the Pretorian guards. Lifting a massive amount of boulders at the end which Luke couldnt do after like 2 weeks or whatever. I love training montages and seeing the development so that was a huge bummer

But fuck if I wasnt smiling ear to ear when Chewie finally hugged Leia

  24. Rian Johnson is very good. This was good, but I have some big complaints. It may end up at some point being in my top 3 though. Loved the risks it took while being essential Star Wars, can’t wait to see it again.

Don’t get most of the negative comments, but I have a few I think it missed on.

I don't think he's an important future character or anything but as an symbol he's more important than just hope, though he primarily acts as that. He grabs the broom with the force. This is why Rey being a "nobody" is important. This kid is a "nobody" too. To me it says Rey is just the beginning of the "awakening" Snoke mentions in The Force Awakens. The whole 'even the least of us can do great things' message and all. Sort of a thesis of this trilogy, really. You don't have to be a Skywalker.
