The scene where the ships collide was absolutely incredible. The whole cinema was in silence at my screening.

I wish I was more like this. Thinking on it is making me less sure haha

Oh, my god. Yes. That moment was frankly absurd. I also spent the whole film wondering when she'd die. She would've done well as the purple haired lady's role (personally, I'd have brought back Lando just for that role). That could've been a bigger emotional moment. Also, Rose "dying"(?) seemed so pathetic to me. She didn't look like she was that hurt but then drops dead (or unconscious?)

It was a great scene. Just felt it could've been done better than with that character. Leia would've been perfect but that's obviously in hindsight after Carrie's death.

Was very disappointed with this movie. Things I had a problem with:

    - Opening scene had no weight and kept us from seeing the Rey/Luke cliffhanger for about 15 minutes
    - Lots of out of place humour, I actually sighed out loud when Luke threw away the lightsaber and the Hux/Poe bit at the start was kinda eh, made a fool of Hux and him not very imposing (don't like Gleeson's performances as him either and I love Domnhall Gleeson).
    - Those E.T. looking nun people on the island and some of the other creatures were weird
    - Snoke was an enormous waste and maybe one of the worst used characters in SW history with a cheap way of dying. I would have been fine with him dying if they at least made it a 2v1 lightsaber battle or something, which I don't see why they didn't. There wasn't a lightsaber battle in the whole film yet you had 3 characters on arguably 3 different sides yet you kill off Snoke in a cheap way and have them fight the red guards instead... waste
    - The hour and a half long plot where the resistance are sitting in a ship while the first order sit in their ship waiting was not a satisfying story line to me
    - I heard the Yoda spoiler before the movie and was let down by it. Thought they should have went for an ep 3 style Yoda and ultimately it came off goofy for me
    - Leia's flying through space moment was just plain weird
    - Finn, Rose and BDT's storyline wasn't great or needed in the movie. It felt like BDT and the casino planet had a story made out of them, rather than them being used to benefit the story.
-Phasma was another massive disappointment. Going by canon novels etc, she should rip Finn in two in seconds, yet 10 seconds after her reappearance she dies pathetically.
    - Okay, I'm not going to lie, I love a lightsaber battle. And going into a movie with Rey, Luke, Snoke and Ren I was expecting greatness. After not getting one with Rey/Snoke/Kylo in a beautiful set, the longer it went on the more I thought we really weren't getting one. Until Luke turns up on the salt planet. And him and Kylo are standing there. I should also add I think that planet and white and red colours and the smoke etc was absolutely gorgeous and maybe one of my favourite visual design I've ever seen in a movie and having this the setting for a Kylo/Luke battle I was like FINALLY this is going to save the film for me and be epic. Until nope, Luke isn't actually there, he's actually still on the island where he dies anyway. If you're going to kill him why not have him go out and have his heroic moment in a thrilling battle? Another waste and his death was very anti-climatic for me.

That was long woah, there were things I really liked about this movie and visually it is incredible. But there are so many misses for me I can't look past them.

I agree with a lot of your points on what is disappointing, I feel like a lot of what was hyped and presented to the viewer was meant just as a tease, and almost purposefully trolling. We're supposed to believe Kylo is so untrained, yet able to kill such a powerful being like Snoke is supposed to be? Rey's parents felt like a cop out for sure. Leia force floating was so stupid. Honestly should have used that as her death considering Fisher's. I could have done without most of the casino parts as well. So much beautiful visuals wasted on pointless things. The mirror with Rey, the dark side well, etc. I wanted way more out of the Luke Kylo fight. If he was able to kiss Leia, could he not have done more than dodge?

Yeah, agreeing with you guys about the casino scene. Was so out of place, and had no depth or purpose. Finn and Rose riding those llama things was so CGI'd and lame it felt prequel-y. Ugh. And I wish there was more to Snoke. TFA made him seem so mysterious and powerful, yet they just fucked him off in this so quickly.[\spoiler]

Yeah, I agree with all of that.

Also, what was with that ending? Did they just shoehorn that kid as an excuse for more Star Wars films, possibly the trilogy directed by Rian? Really underwhelming ending... especially when I was awaiting the emotional impact of Leia's death that never came.

On the untrained point, people theorised that Rey was strong in the force in TFA because she was previously trained by Luke and had been mind wiped or something, turns out she's had absolutely 0 training at all. Also feel a big missed opportunity to explore the Jedi lore and the temples etc. We learned nothing new. And I think that's a large part of the film as a whole, not much progressed. Snoke died but he was never really there. We still have Kylo and Hux leading the First Order, and we have a still untrained Rey with still no real Luke guidance left to take on the First Order. We haven't really taken significant steps forward story-wise. Rey and Kylo toyed with the idea of joining together, Kylo is still toying with conflict yet at the end of the film we seem to be in the exact same place as we were at the end of TFA. Just without Snoke and Luke who had little impact anyway.

Also, did anyone else feel letdown by Poe? Did he really do much story-wish to be likeable/heroic? Was really hoping he'd shine more after a short but likeable 'cameo' role in TFA. He came across as almost unlikeable after getting 'demoted'. He was essentially replaced by Rose.

They could've made him go rescue Finn & Rose (or Finn during that flying scene) instead of overpowering BB-8... who's still awesome but cmon.. controlling a walker was ridiculous. In fact that's another thing that annoys me.

I loved this. Might be my favourite Star Wars film but there were definitely a few wtf moments I wasn't into.

I actually didn't mind that ending scene. Don't think it has anything to do with Rian's trilogy or future films. I took it as a payoff to the scene where Leia or Holdo (can't remember who) is talking about what the Resistance is, and when Finn says to put out the distress call because people around the galaxy believe in the Resistance and that it's built on hope etc. And the scene with the kid was showing the hope that is still out there growing in the galaxy and that the Resistance will live on as long as more people believe in and have hope with their. Wasn't a an epic final scene but I kinda liked it, didn't have a problem with that.

I feel kind of the opposite on a lot of the things I've seen in here posted as negatives. I like so many of the things this film does because it subverts expectations and doesn't take the easy/expected route. Poe for example, I really liked that he ended up not saving the day and it actually made him more likable to me that he was flawed and nearly ended up ruining the plan despite his good intentions. I'm also so glad that Rey's parents were nobodies, so glad. Kylo killing Snoke was exactly what I was hoping for and I loved the way that played out. I loved literally everything to do with Kylo actually which is no surprise to me. I also loved Luke being a weirdo on the island and Porgs added a lot to this movie.

As for some of the things I didn't like... flying Leia in space was awful. I think her actually dying there would have been way more impactful and other than the scene with her and Luke I don't think anything of value would have been lost. The plot at the casino was a bit lame but I did enjoy them freeing all those Trico looking creatures. The last scene didn't really work for me either, felt unnecessary and a bit cheesy.

I'm very excited to see more reactions/opinions.

  19. Man this thread will not bring me down I loved this.

Some criticisms are warranted. a lot of the humor is cheesy and unnecessary and forced. The Leia flying through space was bad and a low for the movie. Gwendoline Christie deserved more than what these two movies gave her.
But there was so much good in this movie.

Adam Driver crushed it. I'm glad we got a lot of Poe and Finn. I loved Laura Dern. I like how in the prequels Anakin is conflicted by the dark side but in these movies Kylo is conflicted by the light side. I thought the way he killed snoke was perfect. Mark Hamill was great. Etc etc

First viewing hot take: This is my least favorite Star Wars film. What a weird...yeah. Tone deaf (in the scope of the film) humor. Stilted dialogue. Gorgeous visuals—especially Luke going through the bombed door at the end. But yeah. This was...uh...not very good.
