    The rivalry is back on

His general demeanor through the early 2010s. His use of homophobic slurs and generally antagonistic behavior towards that community. Nothing specific.

basically yeah, he was horrible from 2010-2013 or so

but i also think a lot of it was him trying to look cool while struggling with his own identity as a queer black man

  4. Yeah, Tyler hasn't apologized for anything or adressed his sexuality publicly (outside of the album) AFAIK, he may not be ready to yet, but I do think that goes a bit deeper than some other cases given the circumstances. The fact that he's since cut almost anything pre-Cherry Bomb from his setlist and gave a huge, openly queer boy band (Brockhampton) a platform at Camp Flognaw says some things to me. Granted, you can see my avatar, Flower Boy is my AOTY for...related reasons...so that's just my two cents.

Not that I know of, and this is the one that's always in the back of my head. It's fucking gross.

Definitely don't mean to infer anyone should give him a pass; I just think there's potentially more under the surface re: a person of color struggling with their identity within a genre that historically has not been kind to the LGBTQ+ community, as showcased by his own words. It's ironic and upsetting not an excusable or healthy way to have dealt with that struggle, and I hope he can address it someday.

How old is Tyler? It doesn't excuse him, especially in the case above, but we all say some dumb shit when we are younger and I don't think he should apologise for each specific issue. Just maybe a general apology explaining why how he acted when he was younger was wrong and how he has took steps towards repairing this.

Half that headline is already untrue lol Tyler says a lot of bullshit either to fuck with people or for whatever reason

Flower Boy may be my AOTY as well. That said, his early albums border on unlistenable for me because of how gross the lyrics are. I know what it's like to be young and queer so he gets zero sympathy from me there, but I don't know what it's like to feel the societal pressure to be a man on top of that, and I think a lot of the gross shit he's said can be chalked up to trying to reconcile his queerness with his masculinity. Not trying to psychoanalyze him, I just don't think it's a coincidence that the aforementioned tweet was directed at two of the most famously gay musicians of the past decade.

An Open Letter to the Australian Music Industry

EDIT: Some big artists have signed the letter, including Courtney Barnett, Tina Arena, The Veronicas, and Sarah Blasko. More than 360 women in the Australian music industry have signed it.

What happened with Mac Demarco? I guess I need to just brace myself for being bummed out since I literally just got into him in November.. :(

  21. Filmed his friend stripping and jerking off at a party where there were minors back in 2012. I think there's a Reddit link in the Google doc on the first page of the thread.

This one is very tough for me to talk about because, much like many of the Brand New fans here, his music saved my life (as silly as it sounds) to the point that I have lyrics tattooed on my arm. I wish he would just address it. I still listen to and love his music, but I can understand why others wouldn't.

This is disappointing to hear. Probably going to have to think about it for a bit. I was really being swooned by his catered personality in interviews and the level of positivity he has in his music. :/

Definitely disappointing and definitely something to consider. I fell in love with his personality and music for the same reasons. And the only reason I feel comfortable listening is because of what his music has done for me; I've managed to twist the story into a case where I question the artist committing the sin vs. being complicit, which I recognize is bullshit because he could've stopped it at any time and a defense mechanism/bias that only I can understand (as well as others whose problematic faves have created art that kept them from self-harm).

It's something I struggle with daily and am constantly working on, to the point that I sometimes consider not venturing into threads like this because it's almost a trigger to face it...not on my own accord, if that makes sense. It's nobody's fault and it should be brought up, but It can be very difficult finding a balance between conditioning it to be something I think about and not beating myself up constantly over having that attachment to the music.

I hope that makes sense. Sorry if this is just rambling or insensitive in any way; it's something that's been on my mind, obviously, for a very long time.

edit: I hope this makes sense and I'm not just a crazy person. Torn between leaving this up and deleting it because putting it into words was draining and now I'm dwelling on it

Good post, dont delete. I believe what you’ve articulated is what a lot of us are going through in regards to some of our other favorite artists as well. Here’s to hoping he addresses it and condemns his own complicity.
