don't wear them in public if you can't maintain your foot hygiene to an appropriate level. don't wear them in public places where hygiene or professionalism is a factor (grocery story, sit down restaurant, hospital, doctor's office, office). Sandals are for the beach, the boardwalk, and the pool. Everywhere else is off limits. This is an understood rule, it's common sense, don't be ignorant.
