Neighborhoods and California just don't feel like the same Blink-182 to me, so it's hard for me to really compare them both. And it's not a Matt/Tom thing. Neighborhoods doesn't feel like Blink to me either.

Idk. Perception I guess. I don’t feel that California or Neighborhoods is ‘not blink’. I consider it just as much Blink as I do Untitled or TOYPAJ, regardless of which I think is better or not.

 

They're not the same blink. Once Tom grew out his hair and formed AVA it was the end of the blink we all knew and loved.

I’d like some more Skiba guitar work in the vein of Continental, We’ve Had Enough, Madam Me, Temptation of St. Anthony, etc. That could work VERY well with Blink. That sound, with him and Mark on vocals, would be incredible.

 

Yeah Tom's riffs are missing but I didn't really want any of what I heard on his demos EP so I don't lament that. There really isn't any part of Tom as a musician RIGHT NOW that I'm missing. We can miss '03 Tom all we want, that dude doesn't exist. I love Cali miles better than Neighborhoods. It's not perfect but it's certainly a blink record and there's some really good songs that fit nicely in their catalog. Bored To Death nailed what Up All Night was trying to be.

They are different.... but it’s easy to compare for me. One is your average decent blink album, one is utter garbage.

 

I don't think either of them are "utter garbage." I actually like quite a few songs from both albums, but as cohesive albums, both of them have their flaws, especially in the production/overall songwriting areas.

 

I never listen Neighborhoods. None of the couple decent songs are really worth listening to.

All songs that I love from the album. Only like 2 that I hate and the others I either like or am indifferent about. I can’t think an album with that many songs that I love is garbage.

 

I wouldn't say its garbage either. However it's very disjointed and not cohesive at all and you can really tell. Ends up killing the overall enjoyment alot.

 

Yeah these days I never listen to it in full because of that, and I pretty much exclusively listen to albums front to back

 

Same, I actually usually find it hard to not listen to an album in full. Aside from pre-release tracks leading up to it.

 

Switch "Natives" with "Snake Charmer" and that'd be my list as well.

Re: Tom's guitar playing... I feel like he was constantly progressing in his actual playing/technique all the way through Untitled, but I think he hit a wall during the first hiatus. It really looks to me like he became more interested in the effects and sound design and stopped focusing on the actual playing - that's why he hasn't really written a stand-out riff since that album (maybe "The Adventure" or "Wishing Well" count). Ever since then, it's been variations of the same riff and recycling what he's already done in the past. You can just tell he doesn't really even play guitar all that much because he lost interest somewhere.

As far as California, I think they just didn't even try. It was clearly Feldy's intention to fill that album to the brim with vocals in every section of every song.

 

I feel like the sequencing of Neighborhoods is really bad. Idk how I would fix it though. I know I'd throw Home and Love in the garbage and leave Ghost as the opener. Beyond that Idk. I think someone said disjointed in here and there's no better word for that album

Snake Charmer's bridge is the best part of the entire album, in my opinion, haha.

 

Heart's All Gone is the best part of the album IMO.

 

I think No Future's bridge might be one of my favorite parts of Cali and I probably listened to it twice this year lol. I like Snake Charmer's bridge but I just despise the lyrics to that song too much lol
