i have to run with music so i always just use my phone. i really need to get a watch tho. i ran the other evening when it was about 40 degrees out with my phone and it went from 60% to 8% in 30 minutes. i dont think it'll last through the utah winter.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

To your point about Strava notifying you through best parts of songs, I was flying tonight en route to that potential PR through Phish’s “Fluffhead” from MSG this year and it started notifying me of the 2 mile mark and then DIED during the peak...

Is that cold weather thing true? Didn’t realize it fucked with it that bad.

I have definitely had issues in the past with phone batteries dying quick in the cold but it’s been single digits and my phone was old. I’m sure in sustained exposure in this weather is not ideal for phones, especially if they are older.

I need to snack more or take care of myself better at work to prep for evening runs. I feel like I am running on empty. Any tips?

My 2nd gen iPod shuffle is starting to take a turn for the worse and there's no support for it anymore. Not sure what to do when it finally dies. Don't really like running with my phone.

I ran my first 5k since march on thanksgiving and ended up tying my last best pr at 7:45/mile, 24:03 overall time and got 5th in my age group so I was pretty happy about that. My mom bought me a new pair of nike zoom winflo 4s and a half-marathon race entry for christmas that takes place in march. i started the nike plus training program for that last night. i am not looking forward to training in december/january weather here in kc and having to run 7-10 miles either in the cold or on a treadmill. blech.

Don’t get too worked up on the winter training. It’s really not too bad. You just have to watch for ice at times , but that’s pretty easy. On days where it’s really bad out use the treadmill. Unless you have an ambitious goal or you don't run much, your training is not going to be a huge jump from the 5k and 10k's. You are basically going to do most runs between 5-10 miles with some tempo/fartlek. I would suggest getting your long run day above the 13.1 distance, but it's not necessary.

If I know I'm going out for a run later, I'll make sure I can eat a lunch 3-4 hours before. Lunch as in PB&J sandwich and some healthy chips, chicken salad sandwich sandwich and soup from Panera, Tuna sandwich with healthy chips. Something bready basically. Something like that. Maybe even a half or a whole Clif bar type situation 1-2hrs before I run depending on how long it's been since I ate.

Also, don’t be afraid to take a GU, gel, chew a few minutes before you run. One with caffeine in it may boost you a long. I usually only ingest those on race days, or long training runs. Nothing wrong with them however.

I ran my first official half marathon yesterday. Made it in 1h:51m:57s or so. It was a one way, very flat course. 8:33 per mil avg pace. Completed my "new years resolution" of doing a half marathon this year. In January of this year, that seemed a little crazy. I'm not 100% back to where I was before I was out for 3 weeks. I probably should have been around 1:40-1:45. I'll do another 13.1 in January and should be about that.

How often does everyone buy new running shoes? I read everywhere that you should change them every 300-500 miles but I feel like that's a myth from sports companies so people buy new shoes multiple times a year. I've done 650 miles on my current pair and they still feel good.

The short answer is it depends on how often you run and what type of shoe you run in. For example, I train in performance trainers as opposed to the standard training shoe. You will get less life out of those. Some of them are borderline flats at this point.
Most people can probably get by on one shoe a year because they aren’t consistent runners or don’t go very far. But if you are a consistent runner racking up mileage you will through a few pairs a year for sure.

If you think your shoes feel a little dead after a good amount of mileage it may be time. That’s how I felt about my Brooks after 200 or so miles. My feet/knees started hurting more and they didn’t seem to have the same coushin they used to. If you aren’t haven’t any new pains and they still feel good then I would keep on going with them though. I like having at least 2 pair to rotate between so your feet aren’t in the same pair over and over again.

Another factor is unfortunately the person’s actual weight and then their foot strike.

17.7 miles today, a new personal best for distance. 9:50/mile, felt like I took it pretty easy. Great chance to burn though some podcasts and run laps around four of my favourite London parks and the old abandoned railway line that connects Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palce. Felt pretty good, enjoying the challenge of marathon training.

I'm starting some "core" exercises for the first time. I just googled some stuff and found a standard routine to begin with so that's how I'm starting. Anyone do anything specific?

Today I ran a mile without stopping, voluntarily, for the first time in at least 15 years. And I could have run longer.

Question though, what the hell do you guys do while you run? I listen to music but I spend so much time in my head already lol

Music sometimes, podcasts sometimes. Sometimes just use it as a chance to clear my head and focus on that one activity. Well done on your return to running!

Thank you, it feels good...which is really weird, haha. I think the sole thing that's gonna hold me back here is my attention span and trying not to be bored as I cart myself around lol

Yeah all music for me. I can’t do podcasts. Music helps me keep a tempo at least. I stack my running playlist with all my faves so I’m mentally preparing for that big moment in the song that gets me amped up and helps me push a little longer or forget about the burning a little bit more and then the next song starts and rinse and repeat. I also am in my head 24/7 so I’m playing out convos and working through personal problems and shit. It’s my time after work to destress and it helps a lot. Congrats on getting back into it!

Did you end up going to that running store and getting some shoes?

Congrats on running a mile! I ran a mile without stopping for the first time since 6th grade not too long ago. It was such a big accomplishment for me.

I'm constantly trying to figure out if music or podcasts are better for me on runs. I really want running to be almost meditative where I'm able to clear my head and thoughts, which hasn't happened yet and feels like it's going to a long work in process to get to that kind of clear headspace. With music, I feel like I'm always counting down the songs I have remaining until done, while podcasts sometimes feel too slow and I end up focusing on my thoughts instead of the content.

It's all a work in progress right now for me.

Not yet, have to wait until the next paycheck. Don't worry too much though, I have a pair of newer shoes with decent arch support holding me over for now.

I would just look for something where you aren't doing the same thing every day unless you are already hitting every part of your core. I would look for some different exercises that involve the upper, lower, and sides of your core. I'm just a fan of mixing things up if I can. Various planks, medicine ball exercises, and exercises that involve twisting are usually a good place to start. If you have space, a bosu ball is nice. Most workouts involving that will engage your core by default and it can usually fit in a closet somewhere.

Belated congrats on the run! Definitely stick with it because if you do I promise you will see a lot of progress if you get past the initial soreness and endurance thresholds. It's one of those things where once your body gets used to it you will find a lot of gains since you are a relatively clean canvas.

I would recommend using music if you must, but try without too. I've had success in the past with new runners by telling them if you feel overwhelmed in the head with various thoughts, create mini targets for yourself on your run. Whatever your time was last time, try and beat it. If you hear a car coming behind you, see how many cracks on the sidewalk you can clear before it passes. If you are on a path and see someone, try and catch them slowly, but consistently. Or time a 30 second spurt where you surge ahead and then slow back down to your normal pace. Once you are recovered, try and beat that first time. Doing little things like that along the way takes your mind away from bullshit and helps you focus and gives you a little healthy competitive spirit. It also gets your body and various muscles used to working at different paces, which is a very good thing. Whatever you do, don't get bummed after a few days and give up or think you are injured. You are most likely going to endure some soreness, much like someone who hasn't lifted in that time span. Your body adjusts to how you treat it for the most part. Good luck!
