Not to bring up the incident from a couple pages back, but the topic of hating genres reminded me of something - I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but I've noticed that it seems like metal gets unfair treatment in the general music community. What I mean by that is that it seems to me that if somebody hates any other genre of music unconditionally, be it pop, indie, EDM or hip-hop and so on, everyone would see that as closed-minded (and more often than not, rightfully so). But if someone were to say that they can't stand or outright hate metal - especially if they specify extreme metal - everyone else would see that as perfectly reasonable.

Now of course I'll be the first to say that, especially extreme metal's case, it's an acquired taste. That goes without saying, and of course I understand if somebody really doesn't care for it as a genre. But in contrast I can't help but feel, having noticed this recurring theme, that it seems like metal as a genre is seen as something that needs to be kept away from the ears of those who aren't into it and if it isn't kept away, the person who subjects others to it is being unreasonable or rude. I've seen a lot of people on Reddit talk about experiences they've had like this where people have gotten very angry with them for subjecting them to metal.

I don't know, maybe the rest of you will go "???" at this and think it sounds very fake and out-of-this-world, but it's just something I personally have seen happen a lot, and I felt like it warranted discussion is all.

Anywho, for a different topic, I'll say that I think Papa Roach is a great band which is sure to curl noses in the case of most music fans you talk to. I believe that's all I have for now, I'm sure I'll think of more later.

I think Ghost Stories is their best album, but X & Y would probably be next, and I really like Mylo Xyloto as well. They were on fire for a while... until that last album, which didn't do it for me.

Yeah when I ask anyone irl what music they like it's often "Anything but metal and rap." I can't pretend like I'm well-versed in metal because I'm not, but I grew up listening to a lot of it from my dad and I enjoy a lot of what he listens to, altho I don't always seek it out myself. Def seems like a genre that gets dumped on often. Most ppl I know skip it in disgust when it comes on or thinks they're satanists corrupting the youths or something

I usually hear "anything but country and rap". Maybe someone will mention "screamo", which is usually a catch all term for anything heavy.

I agree, there do seem to be some genres that it's considered more acceptable to hate. I mean, shit -- if someone had posted that they loathe all pop punk (just one example) none of the posts in this thread would've happened.

Personally I'd rather listen to most metal all day long than most rap. There are some exceptions though.

I don't normally ask people IRL what kind of music they like because most of my friends and acquaintances are fellow music majors and many of them pretty much deal exclusively in classical haha.

I wouldn't call myself a big fan of either genre, but there are some artists in both that I reach for.

Also I can see why it may be considered a race issue, but to me it comes down to just the sound of it.

There are white rappers and rock and metal bands with black members. Usually I'd rather listen to the latter. I couldn't care less about the ethnicity of an artist as long I like the music.

Thinking about it I don't think I ask ppl what they like either. I think they tend to bring it up first and ask me, which I always hate. Nothing I listen to it obscure or anything but ppl still usually don't know it so it's just kinda awkward. Most ppl where I live listen to country so rap and metal/screamo are the hated genres. My coworkers all put on the Christian music station on agency cars and one apologized if it offended anyone who isn't Christian and everyone unanimously was like "I'm not offended! I'm only offended by metal and rap!!" and when they looked to me to agree I was like

And also I won't even front like race/ethnicity doesn't matter to me with music because representation is really important to me and I get waaay more excited when I find out an artist is Latina/o and unless they are a horrible person I will root for them even if I don't like their music lol. There have def been cases where I didn't know an artist was Latino but when I found out I made an effort to listen to their album where I otherwise might not have. I'm a weirdo tho!

Well, color me surprised, then! You'd be among the only people I've met who can as well, haha.

Hah, pretty much what I'm talking about. It still astounds me that there are still people who think it's Satanic by nature - I used to be under the impression that stereotype was long dead ever since the 90's, but I couldn't have been more wrong, lol. To mention what Ftank said, it always seems to me that metal, rap and country form an "unholy trinity" of genres that people feel is acceptable to hate on. Me personally I don't care for much rap either but there are many rappers I know of and respect for their talent. As for country, I respect artists like Johnny Cash but modern country artists genuinely make me wince from how much I do not like the sound (which I know sounds douchey, but I'm afraid it's just really not my cup of tea in any way) - which seems to be an opinion echoed by friends of mine who are into country; that a lot of modern country blows and that older country is way better. How pretentious that is or is not is beyond my knowledge, but it seems to be a common opinion.

EDIT: Oh man, and don't get me started on the "screamo" umbrella term, lmao. Can't stand that generalization.

I can dig that. I get so pumped when I see POC in the punk rock and metal scene. I secretly idolized Sum 41's Dave Baksh in high school. "I COULD BE HIM".

controversial opinion: 80s music, specifically new wave and adult contemporary, is the best music and I could listen to it forever.

I used to always think I hated country too, but that's because the awful bro country stuff is all that's popular. I've come to like some of the more folk-tinged "country" music out there, though it's still not my preferred genre.

Hahaha I hate the term screamo too. It's not even a genre. All it is is a term people who don't like screaming dub anything that has screaming in it.

That's why I hate the term "emo" too. I guess it's come to mean bands like Mineral and Braid and American Football, or maybe it always meant that and I'm just out of the loop, but in middle school I always used to hear the term applied to bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Linkin Park. Really silly. "Emo" = emotional, and what really is music if it doesn't contain some kind of emotion?

Lol, that's ridiculous. Comparatively less variety isn't the same thing as boring. Really irresponsible article title too.

Just strikes me as "we wanted to do something that looks cool so we can back up claims that are stupid as shit".
