They lost it by being spoilt little shits. If anything he helped them by not sending off half their petulant little team.

When I read the headline I thought he was being a douche, but what he says makes sense. The media would have blamed the ref if Spurs had gotten red cards, ignoring the fact they were shitbags all game.

Clatts is still a bellend though.

Idk I think a ref should rule to the laws rather than a narrative

I was trying to describe myself to someone

I don't understand. Why did he go into a game with a game plan to allow Spurs to lose the title on their own? How could he have known that they'd have such a spectacular meltdown?

Also, I don't buy into the idea of refereeing 'the match' rather than applying the rules. Apply them consistently. If the Spurs players then behave in a way which gets multiple players sent off, that is their fault. If anything, not dishing out the correct punishment can let games get out of hand.

Depends what having a game plan means. Rugby refs have a game plan depending on the teams involved, like letting the All Blacks always be offside at the ruck, but they also have a better dialogue with teams before games and are respected.

I get why the narrative becomes a factor in referring (think about World Cup finals etc), the amount of times you hear about a ref ruining a game because he stuck to the rules. Refs need more help in the middle so they can be more sure of making the right call.

There's no way he knew Spurs will implode like that, his ego is getting the best of him in their comments.

I don't think that was his game plan before the game, just when things were unfolding the way they did he decided rather than step in, take control then risk being shit on by everybody for sending a Spurs player off and "costing them the title", he merely stepped back allowed them to fuck it up themselves. Was the right decision imo because Spurs lost the plot and made things worse for themselves after each foul they committed - 1 red card and the whole narrative could've been different and brought unfair pressure on refs.

I don't see harm in a referee deciding to tackle different players, differently. But when a referee goes into a match determined not to give a red card it strikes me as wrong. Like that Spurs game was a calamity. They were over the top and dangerous. There's better ways to referee a match than let one team have a free for all in dangerous tackling without repercussion.

Refs need help, a lot of help, sure. I think respect is a big part of it, as Sam mentioned. Clattenburg mentions in that interview that he picks and chooses when to talk to players because sometimes they won't listen, surely he has to command respect and make sure the players he is refereeing will listen to him, no?
