You voiced your opinion and there's nothing wrong with that.

Not sure if this'll do it, but I'm not a huge hip hop listener and I really enjoyed the Doomtree album from last year, it's called All Hands

I wish ppl in my life liked the same music as me. It's lonely lol. They're still saints tho. My dad still took me to concerts growing up even tho he dgaf about any of the bands (despite the fact that I think he's a closet mcr fan) and my BFF goes to shows with me now even tho she usually is indifferent to everyone we see. And they have to travel a fair distance. So it's cool they're willing to do that cause they know I like the music

I can't say for certain if I've heard either of them (bad with artist names unless I listen to them at any length), but I will give a listen to both. Thanks!

My dad was/is as well, except I never really got into the band aside from a few songs.

Isn't it crazy how much more civil discussions are here as opposed to AP.

I've seen my chemical romance 3 or 4 times and have never once asked for or bought tickets lol. My dad was always on it when I didn't even know they were coming through, asking if I wanted to go. Total fan. He always kept track of bands he knew I liked touring but he went harder for mcr!

This probably isn't the answer you want but if you haven't listened through Kanyes discography you should.

Also, loathe was definitely not the word you were looking for in your original post.

I've never listened to the full albums, just heard songs here and there. Quite a few of my friends are big fans.

And no, probably not, but had I tacked on the words "that I've heard," the point would remain the same. I haven't enjoyed any of it at all.

I can say that I will never like death core or dub step because I've heard plenty enough in both genres. But I still appreciate the craft. I think there's a balance.

Also, twenty one pilots is one of my favorite bands but good grief they aren't rap. I don't think you can critique TOP in light of someone like Kendrick Lamar anymore than you can critique Linkin Park in light of Eminem. Totally different genres. And yes, totally different level of skill.

Give the albums an honest listen if you are interested in exploring the genre more. I'd recommend going in chronological order.

I know it's semantics but it just doesn't seem like you are backing up the use of the word loathe (googles definition of this word is to "feel intense dislike or disgust for). You seem more like you could take it or leave it, like it doesn't interest you, not like you're actively disgusted by it. Think that was the root of a lot of the backlash.

Also, yeah it's a genre rooted in race so it is hard to not be cautious about people's criticisms of it.

I suppose you're right. I'll admit "loathe," based on that definition, probably wasn't the correct choice. I'm certainly not actively disgusted by it or anything of the sort. Reading that definition, I feel a little silly choosing that word. Poor decision.

Yes, you're being dismissive of an entire genre. You're listening to it and dismissing it. Nothing you've said has shown any respect or appreciation for the artistry, even if you don't feel an attachment or investment to the music. Yes, it is hard for me to reconcile someone claiming to be open to something while simultaneously asserting that they loathe the entirety of what they've experienced. Claiming to hate the sound of a genre doesn't do much in the way of justification, because there is such a variety of sounds within any genre.

I know this is the unpopular opinions thread. But I don't think that means statements can't be challenged or questioned. To come in here and expect to be able to just say you loathe the entirety of a genre and then expect that to be it, to try to say "why do people care, this is the unpopular opinion thread", that doesn't show an openness or willingness to engage further, and I think that's what a lot of people take issue with in statements like that, or that kind of participation in a thread like this.

A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Lil Ugly Mane, KRS One, Shad, the Roots, Lil Wayne, Lauryn Hill, N.W.A., Drake, Future, De La Soul, Death Grips, Killer Mike, Outkast, Nas, Jean Grae, BlackStar, there's such a variety of stuff out there, it doesn't do any good to just say you're not into any of it and leave it at that. I consider myself a big film guy and I love all sorts of films, but it really took some pushing for me to appreciate horror as a genre. I wasn't into it growing up and didn't like a lot of what I saw, but the more I got into film and saw smart, great people have such an adoration and respect for horror, I wanted to see what they were seeing and really try to open myself to it. It took changing the way I engaged with those films, educating myself to better understand the context and language of the genre, and now I'm able to consume even more great films because of it, and I don't sound like an ignoramus going on about how I hate horror movies.

I hope this doesn't come off as confrontational or anything. But your initial statement rubbed me the wrong way because I don't like the idea of someone just throwing such charged negativity into a space and leaving it at that. I get that you aren't into the genre and have explored it a little and not found anything that connects with you. But it doesn't further anything or provide anything productive or meaningful for someone to just say they hate a form of art that's extremely vast and encompassing with a rich and fascinating history and evolution, whether it be horror films or hip hop music.

Sorry bout triple post, but this is the unpopular opinions thread. Brandon didn't say anything about whether or not he appreciates and respect the artistry, he just said he doesn't like something. We can debate the merits of his post (and have at length, obviously), but I don't think that in particular is a legitimate criticism of what he said.

Brandon even said loathe was not the right word choice. It's really just kicking a dead horse at this point to keep going after him.
