my new friend @Raditz had me listen to dark before dawn by breaking benjamin and the poison by bullet for my valentine

i was passingly familiar with both bands before, and i liked some of the old bb singles that i knew, so i expected to like some of this album. the first couple songs were cool, but unfortunately most of the record sounded incredibly samey, so i feel like i heard them ten more times after. ashes of eden was a very welcome change of pace, and probably the albums highlight, even tho i feel like it goes on a bit longer than is necessary. i liked angels fall, because the chorus melody is insanely reminiscent of that of goo goo dolls' black balloon, which coincidentally also features the lyrics "angels fall." im not super big on the songs with a lot of screaming - i dont think benjamin is a very good screamer. still a good clean vocalist tho. i dont know if ill be revisiting this too too much in the future, but i like failure, angels fall, and ashes of eden enough to keep around.

the poison wasnt really my thing. ive got an aversion to a lot of modern metalcore, but some of the stuff that was coming out around the time of this record - poison the well, norma jean, every time i die - i love, so i was fairly optimistic for this one. it reminded me a lot of victory records metalcore; theres a lot of that screamed verses, pop punk choruses kinda thing going on here, which isnt really the type of stuff im drawn to. i mightve liked it a bit more if the clean vocalist had a better voice. i dont think it really suited the music almost at all. i already knew tears dont fall as it turns out, so i had some fun hearing that one again for the first time in years, but mostly that was about it.

Absolutely loved the albums I got to check out this week, thanks to @nohandstoholdonto. About to get long-winded here:

Oso Oso – The Yunahon Mixtape

I had heard good things about this band, but hadn’t taken the time to check them out because they seemed like another emo revival act. For the most part, I’ve found a lot of those bands to sound very similar, and none of them have connected with me in any substantial way. I’m so glad this album was recommended to me, because it would have been a shame to overlook this. While it does have a sound and aesthetic that’s similar to the recent emo revival stuff, this has an accessibility that I’ve found lacking in those bands. I’ve been totally into this since my first listen.

Really enjoy the lead guitar riffs and backing vocals in “The Cool,” which kicks off the album in excellent fashion. The second track, “Reindeer Games” has the most immediate and hooky chorus on the album, the kind of thing that tends to grab me and bring me back for repeat listens. Those two and “Shoes (The Sneaker Song)” are probably my favorite tracks on here so far, but the album is enjoyable from front to back.

The variety from track to track also stands out, which makes for an engaging and sometimes unexpected listen. I definitely heard what seems to be a lot of inspiration from ‘00s emo, from The Early November and Death Cab to a few songs (“Bearer of Truth” and “The Secret Spot,” especially) that I found reminiscent of Northstar.

Overall, this is a really great album, and I’m glad that @nohandstoholdonto prevented me from sleeping on it. I’m still spinning this and I think it’s totally possible that it ends up being a late addition to my EOTY list.

mineral girls – this is the last time every time

I want to preface this by saying that I asked @nohandstoholdonto if she could recommend one of her own albums so I could check out a fellow Chorus members’ work. I would recommend that everyone else check this out too because this thing is FANTASTIC.

I would guess that this album is partially inspired by ‘90s emo such as Cap’n Jazz, Bright Eyes, and Mineral, and while I hear some of those influences here, I think the band has a pretty unique sound. There is a huge amount of sonic variation throughout the album, including some math-rock flavor, some very cool time signature changes, aggressive moments (“the bruise on we”), and electronic flourishes (“this is the last time every time”).

The guitars were the first aspect of this record to stand out to me. They are at times angular, twinkly, and propulsive. Sometimes they are all of the above within the same song, such as on the opening track “let’s talk about us.” After multiple listens, I was struck by how many different guitar textures exist within that one song. And that variation continues throughout the album.

The vocals are off-kilter in a way that really draws you in and communicates a vulnerability and urgency that sits very well in these songs. Usually I’m not a fan of vocals like this, as I’m drawn to the clear, technical stuff, but these are perfectly suited for the band and the sound that they’ve created. There are a ton of intense lyrical themes here that I’ve only begun to dive into. I’m sure some of them are still going over my head at this point, but the existential crisis that occurs in the middle of the title track is utterly affecting and unsettling, as is the entirety of “let’s take medicine.”

There is a lot of great writing here and it’s hard to pick out which lines to highlight, but one thing that I noticed is that the final line of almost every song is really thoughtful and poignant. I found that most of the songs left me reeling a little bit, ending on lines such as “I’m not really trying to do any better, I’m just trying to make it look like I am,” and “Dreaming is just lying to yourself in your sleep.” It’s the kind of lyricism that makes you immediately reflect on the song you just heard and want to go back for repeat listens to dive more into the themes and messages throughout.

Production-wise, the album has a clear and warm sound that suits the songs and is inviting and accessible. The guitar and bass tones are both excellent. There are moments in almost every song where the bass would jump out with a nice little run, and it really shines in “bridge over what” (which also features a killer guitar solo). I also really enjoy the lead guitar work in “let’s take medicine.”

As you may be able to tell from my glowing review, I am enjoying this album a ton. I’m not surprised that it’s good, but I am a bit surprised that it’s hitting me as hard as it has since this style of music is not usually in my wheelhouse. Each listen so far has revealed new details and elements in these songs, and they're getting better each time. I think it’s a record that I will continue to appreciate more over time and that has the depth to reward repeat listens. I will be spinning this for the foreseeable future, and it’s pretty awesome that we have this kind of talent represented here within the Chorus community!

Favorite songs: let’s talk about us, this is the last time, this is the last time every time, bridge over what, let’s take medicine, this is the only way to live – OK yeah that’s most of the album so let’s just say this thing is really solid all the way through.

Week 2 was a rousing success. Thanks @nohandstoholdonto!
