When ppl say they dislike a genre I love I'm like how?? What does that even mean? Artists come from all over with countless different influences interpreting them in countless different ways with so many different talents and things they're bringing to the table. Artists within genres are so different in what they do I do think it's sad to dismiss them, including me in my other post about it above. I have the genres I tend to stick to the most but it seems limiting to dismiss an entire genre.

How can you call it a preconceived notion when you have no idea how much of that particular genre someone has heard and disliked?

I couldn't name you the artists, but almost every single one of my friends actively listens to different kinds of rap/hip hop, and I have never enjoyed anything I've heard. Lyrically some of it has been interesting, but the sounds are not for me.

Please don't assume that just because don't enjoy something means they refuse to listen to any of it. I will never tell someone to shut off a hip hop song in the car, or at a party, etc. I'm extremely tolerant, but I don't have to enjoy it.

Why do people keep saying this is sad? Not everything sounds good to everyone. I have yet to hear a hip hop or rap song that sounds good to me. Nobody is dismissing anything.

You said you loathe all forms of rap and hip hop. That's emphatically dismissive.

Which I do. I have yet to hear a song in almost 28 years of being alive that I've enjoyed. Not one song in the genres has appealed to me.

Isn't that exactly the way you would describe it?

Again, at no point did I say I haven't listened to loads of it. You're interpreting it the wrong way.

In high school I used to think I hated country because I associated it with a lot of people at school I didn't like, mostly obnoxious right wing hunters. I thought the sound of a southern accent in music, or the twang of a country-ish chord progression were just turn-offs for me. I thought I didn't like country music. Turns out I was being closed minded, country ran far deeper than I was giving it credit for, and there's plenty that sounds great and is really interesting. Dismissing genres is super weak.

It's sad to me to miss out on the thousands of artists in a genre. I think it's sad that I haven't explored so many genres and are missing out on those artists as well. I think it's sad when I dislike an artist and am missing out on what is so special to them for so many ppl and that I don't connect to it the same way. Idk lol I think a lot of musical situations are sad.

What other way is there to interpret "I loathe all forms of rap, hip hop, and the like"?

That's a dismissive statement. That shuts down an entire genre. It's actually more than dismissive, it brings straight up loathing into the discussion.

I didn't like country until I got older and realized that the stuff playing on the radio was not indicative of the whole genre. I'm southern and the twang used to bother me big time lol

So when you've heard thousands upon thousands of different songs over the years and never enjoyed any of them, all you're being is dismissive of an entire genre? You can't imagine how someone can be open to something but still loathe all of it?

If you've heard thousands and thousands of hip hop songs and don't like a single one idk what to tell you that's honestly impressive I suppose

I mean I think it's weird to cut yourself off or say you loathe a whole genre, but I think of the way I view country: I like select artists, and I know there are others that I'd probably love, but I have little interest in exploring the genre. There's so many hours in the day, and as life gets busier I lose motivation. It happens.

Rap rules though. So that's my contribution.

I have nothing against most of what I've heard. Some of it has been super corny and really bad, most of it has been tolerable. I've just never heard anything that has made me want to listen to it again.

Thousands and thousands of songs wasn't hyperbole either. My last two girlfriends and almost all of my friends have been huge into it.

Different strokes, it just isn't for me.

I mean is that a problem in terms of relationships with your friends? I couldn't imagine not liking any of the music my friends/fiancé were into.

Not really, nah. There are definitely times I wish our music tastes were more aligned, but aside from music, we tend to have similar thoughts on most other things.

With one girlfriend it became a bit of an issue though, mostly her never wanting to go any of the shows I wanted to, and me going to shows she wanted to and not enjoying myself.

Live and learn, it's all good.

I share very little musical taste with my girlfriend, it works fine.

I've only had two relationships where we liked the same music and they were the longest relationships that I've had.

It doesn't bother me at all to have different tastes though.

Okay, I don't want to come off badly (as I seem to constantly) but music should not be so important that it could ruin relationships. My best friend likes no music I like, and loves Nickelback. My girlfriend loves Never Shout Never. I think it's weird people have spent at least a page worth of time going after this guy for not liking rap. That doesn't make his existence sad, but it is "sad" if people actually let music taste define their relationships with people, and causes them to dismiss others.

What? I don't share the exact same taste with all of my friends but I also certainly don't "loathe" the music they love.

I mean, there's more to relationships than one medium of art/entertainment. I loathe everything my best friend plays while I'm at his house, or in his car. That shouldn't effect my relationship with him though.

Nobody here is saying his "existence" is sad, just the fact that he "loathes" an entire genre of music.

I mean obviously, no one ever said that one medium of art/entertainment defines a relationship.

Take arms, it'll all blow over Prestigious

A huge sea of difference between "loathe" and "indifference".

Mind blowing to not like a single song in an entire genre, sounds like massive hyperbole.

Yeah that comes across really badly, especially when someone said the only rap they like is made by two white dudes.

But why would it be a problem? haha Asking if not liking others music is a problem in a relationship kinda implies that music is so important it should effect a relationship if someones hates what others play. Especially when you add that you couldn't even imagine not liking any music that people you have relationships likes. I don't know. I'm sure I'm coming off shitty again like I do 80% of the time on this site though. hahaha So sorry if that's the case.

Referencing me. haha Please tell me you aren't trying to make disliking a genre a race thing (because I know some people do). haha Especially when TOP could hardly be considered rap.
