I can't believe it took that long for someone to make this joke. Honestly the first thing I thought of, too bad I was 2 days late to the conversation.

Also glad to finally see some love for YFW in here. While it isn't as complex as their more recent work, it is still an amazing album, I would almost argue that at times its my favorite BN record (TDAG is just too damn good though).

 

Went on a hike in the woods for 4 days and came back to see that the Brand New thread is in full "Brand New thread" swing.

But I Mene, they have to release a new album soon right?

Do I really need to explain again that "filler" is just being used as a catch all term and we're arguing semantics?

I mean, it just doesn't need to be a big deal. I'll make sure to phrase my thoughts differently next time so people don't get caught up on one virtually meaningless word.

 

No you explained what you thought filler meant. Along with the seemingly the rest of us.

To the person that said they didn't like Adam Lazzara's vocals on TAYF (there's too much "filler" nonsense to find the post & quote): that's because he was trying his hardest to sound like Daryl from Glassjaw (he admitted it in an interview with Alt Press a few years back). After TAYF, he found his own voice.
And in the same vein: I don't really like Jesse's cover of Trailer Trash because he's trying too hard to sound like Isaac Brock, whether he means to or not. The rest of his vocal work is solid, and I don't hear the "cowboy accent" on Daisy or the Morrissey impression on Deja.

 

I don't like Adam Lazzara's vocals on any TBS album

 

It can be hard to cover things you've been listening to your whole life and not let the original vocalists style come through on your cover. I don't think it's really a matter of someone trying to sound like someone (Jesse sounding like Isaac in this case).

 

Isaac Brock also has a pretty unique voice and style; somewhere between singing and talking/shouting, all heavily directed by his lisp. His songs would probably sound goofy as hell if you tried to actually sing them, unless you had a good enough singing voice to justify it (see Kevin Devine's covers). Same could be said for bands like Say Anything, La Dispute, Thursday etc.

I don't remember what video whoever posted, but someone put up a Smiths video to highlight their point and it clicked with me. I mean, Jesse doesn't sound like Morrissey at all, it's not the actual sound he's doing, it's the style, the way things are sung and carried, etc.; only thing missing is the accent. Once I heard it I couldn't un-hear it.

 

Anyone here been to Madrid? Got suggestions for stuff to do? We have another day to spend here then we're off to Frankfurt.

 

I can back this up. Unless I forcefully try to reinvent an aspect of the song within the cover, it's incredibly easy to become lenient to the way the original sounds. It's a barrier that's hard to break, as I do have my own voice, but my Jesse-ego and Jim-ego sneaks in ever so slightly whenever I cover BN/JEW, even if it's just a few syllables within the cover. It's hard to disassociate the vocals when they were and still are massive inspirations.

It even works from a live aspect, too. Jesse loves to fiddle with his vocal sound live, so after hearing them enough on recordings, they find their way to become recreated within my covers because, on a subconscious level, they are part of the art I love so much. It's the second layer of appreciation (the live sound inspiring me, not accidentally mimicking the vocals).

Eh, I hate that argument. Don't think an album should be viewed as better because of the impact it made, you can respect it for what it's done but there's no reason to elevate it as an album because of that

Deja doesn't hold up well IMO.

 

It's definitely fallen off for me since seeing the whole thing live a few years back. Don't really listen to this band that much anyways anymore, and wasn't a huge fan to start, Devil and Daisy are very good though. Excited to finally see those songs live this summer (still bummed I got the first two in whole haha)

 

Pretty much agree with all of this.

 

I like Adam's voice in any era as long as it's not as pitchy as he can sometimes be. I definitely noticed his Daryl impression once I started listening to Glassjaw. There is only one Daryl Palumbo and few vocalists in the scene come close.

I regret bringing up the "cowboy accent." Haha. I was just referring to how hard his Rs can be in more recent stuff. Doesn't bug me, was just an observation.

Honestly, I think Brand New could pull off a release similar to what Radiohead did.

 

I think they could as well, but don't think they will do that. I think the fastest turnaround from announcement to release that we will see is a month.

Greater Pyrenees release was pretty quick from announcement to release.

 

What's the deal with Coasta (Jamey Lacey)? are they ever going to release more music? I loved their 'Sunzal' EP and then they just fell off...

 

Yeah I don't think they will either. Someone earlier in the thread was claiming they couldn't pull off a surprise release or super short announcement release. I think they totally could pull a Radiohead. But I don't see them doing it

 

brand new are no where near as big as radiohead. no way they could pull off a surprise release lol

 

My thought is that they'll announce it with a single release sometime in the next week or two, my guess on release date is in between the Canada and US tour.

I think they can pull that off, gives them a month to ramp up the hype, which I think that machine will start running without their fuel.

This is all hypothetical, but kinda based on everything I've heard in the past month or two. This is the absolute best case scenario. Worst case is we get it in the Fall. (We're getting it this year, they weren't twiddling their thumbs in Texas.)
