Played a bit and can't really comment on anything yet obviously but, even going in knowing there was a difference, I was surprised at how much worse this looks in handheld mode. It's fairly crisp in docked mode but turns into a blurry, clearly low-rez mess in handheld mode. A little disappointing.

Oh and the music is already excellent 15 minutes in.

Does it look worse than this makes it seem? I think this looks pretty great for this kind of game on a handheld but I'm pretty easy to please usually in terms of technical visuals.

That's mostly about it (a little blurrier I think), it still looks decent for a handheld but the sub-native resolution was more apparent when it's on a screen pretty close to me. It's still perfectly fine/playable of course, I just hadn't seen a game downgrade that much from docked to handheld so I was a bit surprised.

Okay finished Chapter 1, game's great so far. Battle system is fun from the options I have so far, although still obviously basic a couple hours in. The story is off to a good start, world seems interesting, characters are fine (still hate the main character's design but whatever, getting used to it). A lot of cutscenes so far but they look very nice, animated much better than they were in XBC/XCX. Basically it just feels like a sequel to the original Chronicles so far and that's good.

  8. Kotaku trashed it pretty hard on their podcast today. I'm still excited to pick it up.

Their review is basically the only bad one though and the reviewer also did not like XC1, so yeah

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I love super Mario odyssey speedruns.

For what it's worth, I asked the USGamer reviewer if she noticed the game looking bad on the handheld screen and she said she didn't notice anything significant. She says it has largely the same technical problems docked and in handheld mode.

Enter open area at level 7, immediately see a level 81 creature wandering around. Yep, this is Xenoblade.

I also can't get over how good the music is. IT'S SO DAMN GOOD.

Man, that Kotaku review for Xenoblade is super offputting.

The finale of Super Mario Odyssey is incredible. Wow.

I'm glad it exists. The positive reviews come from people predisposed to like a game like Xenoblade so its nice to have one written by someone who loves JRPGs but isn't smitten with this particular series. The Tim Rogers video on Kotaku is a good counterbalance as it is super open about the flaws but Rogers also really loves the game and shows why clearly.

It seems like Nintendo is promoting a large-scale niche game as a mainstream game and I'm interested to see how regular players take Xenoblade 2 when it clearly wasn't made thinking about modern gameplay conventions.

I just finished chapter 1 and all I can say is I’m hooked. This is exactly what I wanted from this game.

The cutscenes are so cool, the battle system is promising and the characters are pretty likeable. This is a dream JRPG.

No Xenoblade gametime this weekend. It was supposed to be delivered today and proceeded to just sit at the delivery company's facility all fucking day. Sigh. Whatever.

At least you already know it’s going to be worth the wait.

Some frame rate issues while docked while traversing towns, but not during battles which is a relief. And tutorials are way better than the ones in XCX. There are still plenty of stuff happening but it’s much more accessible in showing WHY it’s fun than the previous game.

To anyone still on the fence, I’m not sure what other game to compare it to. Maybe the skill progression of an MMORPG? It’s still an action game that requires a bit of timing (like for every 3 hits you can immediately follow up with a skill, and that skill becomes more powerful), and I feel like you can still finish the game without completely mastering the ins and outs of combat - but it sure is rewarding learning to do so.

There’s a weapon-collecting element and upgrades are straightforwart too. It is very story driven so expect a lot of cutscenes.
