It is def long. I always skip all the remixes and alternate language version of songs tacked on the end tbh

Pat Metheny and Sløtface are both sick, that Chumped record is tight too

Lot of cool music popping off in here, worried that I’m gonna have a lot of punk/pop punk sent my way that isn’t gonna click tho

This week i got a couple swell albums from @jorbjorb

First was Carry Ourselves by Continuance. I’d like some more variation in the vocal delivery as the guys screams are kinda silly sounding but musically at least, this is right up my alley. Reminded me of old from autumn to ashes and the first Departures record, both of which i love. Lots of fun guitar work on the album.

Next up was Right for Me by Brighter Brightest. This was more down the pop punk spectrum but was also a fun listen. Jorb thus goes 2\2 this week. This album reminded me a lot of grayscale. Thought some of the vocal melodies were a bit boring but plenty of catchiness too. I’ve been coming back to both throughout the week.

Ok, first I wanna point out that u have the same taste in music as my mom @iCarly Rae Jepsen. She loves Nelly Furtado and Duran Duran. Ok, anyway

Duran Duran. I knew I'd enjoy this one because I know enough about them and their vibe. But my problem was that as a kid when my mom would listen to Duran Duran I'd be like mooooom this is so laaaame omg put on Samantha Mumba and go away. So it's hard for me to shake that idea of them in my head haha. They have the misfortune of being like musical mom jeans for me. But mom jeans are back in style so whatevs!! i enjoyed it! My fave was Last Chance on the Stairway.

Nelly Furtado. So I'd heard Whoa, Nelly cause my mom had it lol, but I'd never heard this one despite the singles being massive. Lemme just start off by saying I had no idea she had a song with Juanes. And then I looked and she also has one with Juan Luis Guerra wtf??? Like what kind of actual bachata legend. Anyway, I enjoyed this one too. My faves aside from the big singles were Te Busque and All Good Things. I'm gonna check out Mi Plan next. I already listened to the song with Juan and it is obv flawless. I always thought Nelly had a cool tone.

I received a hip hop album rec. I've never listened to that kind of music before aside from radio singles.

    Alright @manoverboard365 here goes.

    Camp Cope - s/t
Definitely got heavy Cayetana vibes from this, and to a lesser degree, Hop Along in the vocals. Very cool album, this was very immediate and I think the vocals are a big reason why. The songwriting lets itself really breathe in the simplicity, mostly open chords and not a ton of effects. I think this works in their favor because it made me really key in on the vocals, and I was surprised that some of the lyrics seemed to touch American politics. The focus on vocals wasnt really what I expected bc I think on their wiki page it said something comparing them to Courtney Barnett, so I suppose i thought the guitar work would be more intricate. Either way I had a ton of fun with this, I'll definitely come back to this and check out the next full length. Kind of hope they tweak the songwriting just a tad, but honestly this was so solid that they wouldn't have to and I'd still really enjoy the follow up. Very cool.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Given what I knew about them -- basically just "why'd you only call me when you're high?" -- and that this record was by an English band in 2006, I was kind of just expecting something in the vein of the Strokes. I was half right I think -- they have this garage rock feel in common, but this band is overall a lot more muscular sounding, and the vocal delivery is a lot more intricate because the lyrics are much wordier. I thoroughly enjoyed this, that mid 2000s indie rock stuff, especially the indie based around New York and the UK, is stuff I largely missed the boat on, and it's cool to find stuff from that era that I can latch onto. There were times were the songs almost risked blending together, but this was offset by repeat listens. Even if they hadn't, I had so much fun listening to it that I wouldn't mind either way. Love the danceable, staccato riffs in most of the songs.

Here are my thoughts on the second album that @skurt assigned to me:

    Boys Night Out
    Trainwreck
    2005

My only exposure to Boys Night Out prior to this had been their 2007 self-titled album. I remember liking it, but for whatever reason I never went back to check out their first two albums. Trainwreck is their second album and I wish I had checked it out sooner because it would've been right up my alley at that point in my life.

This is a concept album that follows a man after the murder of his wife he committed in his sleep. I won't get into much detail regarding the story, but the album starts out (and ends) with the main character's physician giving a spoken word account of his patient. As the album progresses, it touches on several themes - loss, regret, medication, depression, and recovery to name a few. I did not read anything about the album prior to my initial listen, so it was interesting to read about it afterward. I think that further listens of the album will uncover some things that I didn't pick up initially.

Musically, I would compare this album to Armor For Sleep and Halifax. I like both of those bands, but both of those are groups that I listened to a lot in the mid-2000s mostly.

My favorite tracks were Dreaming, Waking, Medicating, and Relapsing. A minor criticism I have of this record is that the songs (to me at least) tend to blend together a little bit and toward the last few songs of the record seem pretty similar and indistinguishable. That's what makes more unique tracks like Relapsing and Composing stand out more to me. I also really liked the songs that had background vocals which added some nice depth to the songs.

Alright so here's 2 more from me, via @shanerockey.

    Racquet Club - Self Titled

Well, if you are going to have a hard to spell band name, doubling down on it in the album title is definitely the way to go.
Racquet Club have made a very modern sounding rock record with big hooks, exciting arrangements and big, booming production. The singer is doing his best Good Mourning-era Matt Skiba impression while the band itself reminds me of Make Do and Mend with a little more finesse.
Herein lies the crux for me with this record. It doesn't really do anything particularly interesting or outstanding. It's simply good, and I'm not sure if I'm ever in the mood for its middle of the road energy.

    Ron Gallo - Heavy Meta

Ron Gallo is a clever dude. Just by looking at the song titles you can tell he has quite a heady approach to writing. The record is littered with witty quips and interesting observations. Heavy Meta came out in 2017 but you'd be hard pressed to tell. Everything here sounds old. Except Ron, who is ostensibly very young. He seems pumped to be doing this, which translates well to the record. He masterfully plays with dynamics, conjuring up huge crescendos while navigating the twists and turns of his rock songs with aplomb. He's also quite an excellent guitarist, but unfortunately not a very inventive one, as the riffs aren't really anything to write home about (they're good, just overdone.
That said, I think Ron and I could probably talk about pedals forever, he has quite a few interesting fuzz tones going on the record which I appreciate.
I think for fans of whatever genre this record is in (Blues-Rock?), this is a sick record. Personally, I don't really connect with this record emotionally so it's not something I see myself returning to, but will always respect from afar.

you should, you'll probably really like it or throw it on low key in the background when you have people over. it's not a bad record by any stretch of the imagination.

Okay, finally got my write up done from @skurt's recommendations

    Hawthorne Heights – Hurt

I’ve never really listened to Hawthorne Heights outside of a few songs in middle school. Overall, this was a pretty decent record, though. All the sung melodies throughout were crafted really well and catchy. The screaming, on the other hand, I was not a big fan of, but that’s just because I’m not a super big fan of screams in general. I really liked all the guitar tones on the album and think it sounds super big and heavy, which is what they’re going for clearly, but I feel like the riffs they were playing were a bit simple for my tastes. Again, it was a decent record, but it may have been overshadowed by the other album I was recommended.

Half Moon Run – Dark Eyes

Currently listening to this right now, it’s so good. Like others have said, there’s some Radiohead influence in this, but I think they still have their own unique sound enough that it’s not overly obvious. Full Circle is a great song to open the record with. The guitar work is stellar and the melody is super catchy and gets your attention right away. It’s definitely one of my favorites from the record. The rest of the album has a great variety of songs that kind of touch on a take from different genres, but all sounds extremely cohesive in the end. There’s obvious a bunch of emotion throughout, especially in the vocals, and you can also hear it in the guitar work a lot. I don’t know, it’s just a super great record and I’m great it was my first recommendation haha.

Really glad you loved Half Moon Run, and the love for them in this thread this week has been fantastic to see. The first time I ever heard these guys was live when they opened for City & Colour and I loved them since. I also highly recommend there second album Sun Leads Me On.
