  9. Also this is easily a top 5 album for me - glad I didn’t stupidly release an EOTY list last week ;-)

Damn...so many thoughts. This is probably gonna come off like a post-movie screening brain dump, but whatever.

First listen was through my in-ear monitors while staring intently at my drum kit like an absolute weirdo. Overall, I really, really like it. It feels like a musical continuation of W&T but a vocal extension of CB in that Daryl keeps it moody and doesn't really go for anything flashy or ostentatious, save for a few moments. I love EVERYTHING Beck does with the guitars on this record, and Beck2 on the bass goes toe to toe with him in a way that makes me wish I played in a band with someone whose bass was permanently stuck on distortion because he/she is too lazy to fix their pedal. Rymer is pounding back there, and he was given a few moments to shine that I'm gonna be hitting repeat on for weeks to come. I wonder if his role in this was similar to that of Ilan Rubin on Paramore, where the music and drum parts were largely already written and he was called in just to add some personal flair, or if he actually got to write the parts from scratch and do his thing. Probably the former knowing these guys. Either way, it works magnificently. The drum tones they landed on for the Bastille/Pompeii one-two punch are some of my favorite I've heard in years.

I kinda agree with the sentiments some of you guys have shared about songs blending with one another, but it didn't affect me too much because this was the only time in years where I was able to listen to an album for the first time while doing nothing else. I find it kinda funny that on the liner notes for EYEWTKAS there was a remark along the lines of "fuck everyone who looked for the 'hook,'" when that catchy element in the choruses was one of the things I felt made this band such a standout among their peers. That era is definitely gone, and it's probably the one thing I'm gonna miss the most in their sound. It's balanced out by how fucking heavy they sound now when they go for it, though. I remember being crushed when they lost Todd all those years ago and I realized they weren't gonna replace the second guitar in their live sound. Yet, when I saw them last Friday and a year ago with Coheed, all I could think was "could these guys get any heavier?"

Fuck, I can't wait to hear some of these songs live.

  12. Why don't they play Cosmo Bloodloss live?

Ian Cohen was among the people who received stuff so I'd wager yes.

Just got to Pompeii, and I’m confused by some of the comments saying this blends together. The first three songs maybe. Though they are obviously meant to it seems. Strange Hours and Pompeii have both thrwown a nice juicy curveball.

    Loving this so far
