They're playing a show here in February for $10. I should probably go.

Ghoul and Gwar were a lot of fun last night, but He Is Legend really stole the show for me, personally. I missed U.S. Bastards.

Here's an early attempt at making an unranked metal/hardcore top 10 list for 2017. I'm too lazy to separate out metal and hardcore at this point so take that for what you will:

    Power Trip - "Nightmare Logic"
Full of Hell - "Trumpeting Ecstasy"
    Firewalker - "S/T"
    Concealed Blade - "S/T"
    Satan's Hallow - "S/T"
    White Death - "S/T"
    Incendiary - "Thousand Mile Stare"
    Memoriam - "For The Fallen"
Converge - "The Dusk in Us"
    Exit Order - "Hysteria"

Good year for bands with self-titled debuts. :)

Honorable mention because they're a former metal band and will likely be top 5 on my overall list: Ulver - "The Assassination of Julius Caesar"

    Honorable mentions:
    Monolord - "Rust"
    Ledge - "Cold Hard Concrete"
Chepang - "Dadhelo: A Tale of Wildfire"
    Woe - "Hope Attrition"
    Hexis - "Tando Ashanti"

I gotta sit and think about my list for a bit, definitely some stuff I wanna revisit and other things I have yet to get to

In other news, going to see Bell Witch tonight. Hometown crowd!

I somehow missed that Genocide Pact released a new song this week. It's sick with grooves and riffs for DAYS. Q1 2018 is going to be a good few months for death metal releases.

Show was alright, but not because any of the bands. Bell Witch had 3 openers and I only planned on catching the third band, Monarch - a doom/sludge/drone band from France. It was already gonna be a late night with Monarch slated to go on at 11pm followed by BW at midnight. I got there at 10:56 and the third band was still playing.

I guess it was Monarch's first day on the tour and they were an hour late so they didn't even go on until like 11:40 or something ridiculous. They had some kinda technical difficulty about 20 mins into their set that halted the show for 10-15 minutes. They were interesting. Typical huge fuzzy-ish/doom-y guitars. The vocalist was this tiny girl whose vox were coated in reverb and she would whisper and croon and wail like a banshee while the bassist handled all the harsh vocals. I was kinda into it, if only for the showmanship. They played 2 songs (I think?)...hard to tell with these bands when songs are like 20+ minutes long lol

Bell Witch didn't even start until 1:04 am, which I'm sure the venue was happy about as they close at 1:30. It was a hometown show for them so it was totally packed. I knew they were a two man band but I underestimated how massive their sound is for just the two of them. The bassist/clean vocalist plays this six string bass with crazy distortion on the heavy parts and chorus and reverb on the softer sections. He plays with his right hand on the high part of the fretboard with nothing but hammer ons/pull offs/tapping while he places the chords with his left hand. It was actually pretty insane, my hand would cramp up in like 10 minutes of attempting that lol. The drummer did all the harsh vocals. They played a large part of Mirror Reaper and ended around 2:20ish? Then the venue people immediately started yelling at everyone to get out.

Good show, albeit with some setbacks. I'd recommend seeing them only if you're into funeral doom/doom in general as you'll be watching two guys played one song for like 40+ minutes with long sections of no vocals.

PS they were selling this huge double-sided flag with the album art of Mirror Reaper on the front/back at their merch table. I have no idea what you'd do with it but it looked awesome lol
