    - Heavy Head
Not quite my thing these days, but something I would've loved at points in my life. Pretty cool guitar riffs, pretty simple structures, very impassioned vocal lines and confessional, uplifting lyrics, it's a tried and true combo. That Classic Crime/Tooth and Nail sound. None of the arrangements struck me as all that interesting, unfortunately. They inched towards American Football at moments but never quite got there.

    Spraynard - Funtitled
Now this one is a bit more my speed. This band has pretty huge everything (guitars, drums, hooks) yet always manages to give off the impression they're doing a lot with a little. Wasn't wowed lyrically, but a super solid vocal performance, loved some of the longer riff-y passages and pretty much all the drumming on this one; deceptively tight and together grooves. Super rhythmic but not showy.

Mansions – Dig Up the Dead

Full disclosure, I had heard this album before but hadn’t listened since 2011 and didn’t remember much about it. I vaguely remembered enjoying it, so I thought this would be a good excuse to get reacquainted.

My favorite thing about this album is how it transitions seamlessly from lo-fi acoustic guitar and shaky vocals to massive wall-of-sound arrangements. Case in point, the quiet title track leads right into the full-band “Not My Blood,” which might be my favorite song on here. I think the contrast between soft and loud makes the big moments pay off really nicely, which may be why my favorite moments on the album are the explosive jams at the ends of “Not My Blood” and “Seven Years.” I also really enjoy the earworm chorus in “City Don’t Care.” There are some great hooks here that are right in my wheelhouse. The lyricism is super dark at times, but it has a lot of depth. I’m glad I could give this a few more focused listens and reintroduce myself to this album. I’m definitely going to be coming back to this one and checking out more of Mansions’ discography in the future.

Martha – Blisters in the Pit of My Heart

I just heard about this band for the first time this year, but had yet to check them out. This was a good opportunity to do so, and I am really glad I did. Lots of catchy hooks here in upbeat punk/pop songs. I enjoyed the interplay between the male and female vocalists and how they trade off lead vocals throughout the album. Kind of reminds me of a more punk The Subways. I will admit that the vocals took a bit of getting used to, but I felt like I acquired the taste fairly quickly after only two or three songs. Music in this vein isn’t always my thing, but I found a lot to like here and I will be revisiting this album and following this band. Favorite moments: chorus of “Chekhov’s Hangnail,” guitar work in “Do Whatever,” all of “11:45, Legless in Brandon” (hat-tip to the bass runs in the instrumental sections), lyrics in “St. Paul’s (Westerberg Comprehensive).”

Awesome experience for this first week! Looking forward to week 2!

So glad you're digging Radiohead. The Bends is probably my 4th favorite album of theirs, right behind In Rainbows, Ok Computer, and Kid A. The great thing about Radiohead (specifically post-Bends) is that it usually doesnt click first listen. It takes multiple listens to really pick up on how intricate their music is and how talented and forward thinking they are.

It's my 5th-7th favorite depending on mood (they're my favorite band though so 7th favorite I would still rate insanely high) so I suggested it to him so he'd end up getting more into them. Hopefully it works!

@Kiana gave me Porter - Moctezuma and here are my thoughts:

This album grooves. Instrumentally, there’s so many cool things going on. The ending of Murcielago threw me off in the best way, the complete change at the end of it made me knew I was going to really enjoy this album. Huitzil honestly sounds like a huge rally cry, that song is motivational as hell. I have no idea what he’s singing, since I’m not fluent in Spanish, but I’m definitely going to look further into that aspect of this album. After multiple listens, I think La China was my favorite song, though this whole album is fantastic and is something I’ll definitely be going back to.

    Keep on moving. Busy street.

I got Latterman - No Matter Where We Go...! (thanks @bradsonemanband )

No Matter Where We Go…! is full of raw energy and ideals. Overall, I think this album is about finding your place in the world, struggling to feel comfortable in your own skin and trying to be a decent human being. The lyrics also touch some social issues without feeling too preachy. The message in some of these songs is more relevant now than ever (for example, questioning your own maleness and dealing with your privileges).

MusicalIy, I really enjoyed the song structures. There are many variations that keep things interesting from start to finish. This album is so restless. It’s a perfect middle ground between youthful and mature. I will be listening to it for more than a week, that’s for sure.

  19. Thank you for organizing this! I've always enjoyed sharing and receiving recs. It's cool to have a structured way to actively listen and provide feedback that can encourage wider discussion.

I think it's safe to say that most of us are here because we love music and want to be a part of this community. This club seems to get to the heart of those things in a really positive way. Great idea!
