Based on glass boys I'm expecting them to just be a straight psychedelic rock band on the next album and I can't wait

Real talk, if you don’t include trans women in the female category then I side-eye you.

Not aimed at you, Casey, just something I notice happen a lot. Yes, it’s important to showcase trans talent and the distinction is important to note bc of how marginalized we are, but you can do so and also not other us. Also, been thinking about how we categorize vocals and how we use the phrases “female” and “male” vocals in ways that exclude, alienate, and trigger trans folks. Not to mention, like, that’s so non-descriptive? What’s the artist in question’s vocal range, what are the qualities to their voice, etc etc? /rantover

Yeah when I say female I implicitly include trans women because well they are women

oh, i know this, most of the acts posted have been of cis women so i wanted to make it 100% clear to everyone that this all matters.

the spoiler part is something i've thought about as well and i've put into my writing, i stopped using any gender classifiers in anything in my reviews, "frontperson" has become common in vocabulary for me as well. but yeah, i agree with you entirely of course

You are one of the good ones! Tbh when the word “female” gets thrown around my first reaction is to automatically assume that I’m excluded from that category in the eyes of the person using the term. Probably not fair, but it’s fairly common for it to be used as a sort of weaponized terminology against trans women.

Yeah, like I said, it’s not just bothersome from a standpoint of exclusion and whatnot but it also just feels like incredibly lazy shorthand, especially used in the context of reviews/etc.

i remember on Ap once I was arguing with a brick wall who didn't think saying they don't like female vocals was sexist and I tried explaining how vocals are just vocals and they're conditioned by a sexist society to prefer male vocals and they did not get it at all

I've definitely had this discussion IRL but held back because it was with my ex and I didn't wanna like mansplain sexism to her hahaha, I wasn't sure how much I could say without coming across as an ass

Man I need to get more into Silversun Pickups, I love everything I've heard by them but just never give them the time of day. Love me some shoegaze

Also they're not everyone's cup of tea but Sleigh Bells are great if we're getting into the realm of prominent female-membered artists that do distortion real nicely

  19. Also, FYI on the Neck Deep stuff - the claims against their bass player Fil Thorpe were outed as false over 2 years ago. The girl who posted them admitted they were false after their former guitar player left the band, but she deleted her Twitter account a few days after. Someone started recirculating the allegations as screenshots right after they announced their most recent album. There are currently no allegations against other members of that band.

So I’ll respect people still choosing to condemn them, but this is actually what happened. Sucks because when people make up fake allegations it causes people to assume that other allegations are fake too, which is horrible.

*******He said women are just not good singers for ROCK bands though, so it's ok to say that! As long as they stay in their place (pop music) then they are A-OK!

I didn't see anything about the allegations being false? Not to say I don't believe you on this but I swear allegations were in place against everyone but Ben... Is this meant to say every single one of those have been retracted?

I manage to underrate that band severely for some reason, but when I revisit their discography, I realize that they’re hugely influential to me. Honestly, I wanted the song bridge over what off the latest MG album to sound like a SSPU song lol, even down to how I approached the harmonies. I kinda wish we could’ve gotten it to sound like it came off Swoon, production-wise. I think I’m overdue for a run through of their discography.

How is their latest stuff? I didn't give Neck of the Woods much of a chance and I don't even think I've spun Better Nature yet
