It's extremely charming and very fun, especially as a DQ fan, but a few things were less than ideal - the story was divided into chapters, where after each chapter you would entirely lose your previous town and have to start over in a new area, using different recipes/types of buildings, essentially a very long tutorial for a free build mode (where the things you learned in each area wouldn't unlock in the free build mode until after you complete a chapter). There's also no multiplayer, which is a bummer for a builder game. I had a really good time with the story but I burned out by the time the campaign was done and never got around to actually building a town by myself without the constraints of the quests. If you want a structured building game that guides you around, it's a very good time (and don't mind essentially starting all over every 5-8 hours), but if you're looking for something to REALLY get creative with then it's not quite that.

There's a sequel next year (in Japan, announced for NA with no release date yet I believe) that should address some of these things though.

thanks for the in-depth thoughts. i would say no multiplayer is the biggest con here. if i can find it for < $30 i think it's a lock

There needs to be a NieR Video Game Universe (NVGU [tm]) Collection compiling all three titles in HD on PS4. And there needs to be one yesterday.

 

also dont forget to read the book after nier and don't forget to watch the stage play before automata jeez how can u know the loar without the extnded univrse

they really shouldn't rerelease drakengard in 2017

it played very badly at the time and has aged VERY poorly

 

yeah, just watching it on youtube should be more than enough.

 

I was just being silly, fixating on NieR’s weird lore history for no real discernible reason haha

Drakengard is best left forgotten on the trash heap of history, clunky mechanics, incest subplots and all.

 

I can't even imagine what thinkpieces would pop up from reintroducing Drakengard 1 to a Western audience today.

 

probably the same kind that were upset about the lack of diversity in medieval Poland.

 

i am racking my brain over what to get. leaning towards Kingdom Hearts and Nier, but also want to get something multiplayer. rabble rabble.

 

titanfall 2 is pretty great and very cheap.

 

If you’ve never played Kingdom Hearts, get that collection. It’s so, so much great content for the price. KH2 alone is worth whatever it costs now, but KH1 and Birth By Sleep are also amazing games.

As for multiplayer, yeah I’ll second the Titanfall 2 recommendation, that game is amazing.

 

also, TF2 has one of the all time great shooter campaigns.

 

Kingdom Hearts is the only guarantee. I played 1, 2, and 365/2 but only once each at launch (i know 365 isn't playable, which is good because it was the most repetitive thing)

 

Oh then yeah get NieR and Titanfall 2. Both great games.

 

Titanfall 2 is one of the best sequels of this generation, hands down. Arguably the best.
