This is sort of how I feel as well, but hey it’s not like they don’t deserve it. This article certainly did a good job at making me feel crappy for being male and loving this music. I’ve been connected to that third wave of emo for almost half my life, pretty crazy... I remember being in high school and thinking those lyrics really spoke to me, it never occurred to me that they were so destructive and problematic until I was older.. I just always blindly went along and thought the songs were about being hurt when you are young...I also continued on thinking well they’ve grown up or it was just bc they were immature. I was wrong

A lot of problems with that article, but were BN really the most popular during the myspace era?

idk, I feel like just because you enjoy Silence of the Lambs you don't also assume Anthony Hopkins actually eats people.

Really? It's got a lot of errors that completely killed it for me. "Sugar We're Going Down Swinging" is not the song title is just a glaring example. As a writer you always strive to get every detail as accurate as possible. Also the there's just huge leaps of logic and reasoning within a lot of it. Also completely sensationalist in a lot of areas. Considering the majority of FOB's fans are women (especially in that era), I would rather the author acknowledge that the songs are often gender-less in the way they are received by the audience. Andy Greenwald wrote about this in 2003's Everybody Hurts and concluded young girls tend to not see these songs as about women specifically, which I think is far more interesting.

I also just think the bad writing itself is a turnoff, but that's me.

I certainly can see why publications passed on it.

yeah I feel like there's a reason publications didn't want that article. It's just bad, sorry. And I am sure it would've gotten the clicks.

also I feel like writing these sensationalising think-pieces isn't really a good way to create a space where victims can come out knowing they'll be supported, instead you just end up sucking the air out of the room. bad form.

also with that tweet she inadvertently made someone else's pain about herself.

I know on Brian Diaz' post a lot of people were talking about Andy Hurley and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy...so perhaps that is the big scene band Jason is talking about, but I thought those allegations (at least with Wentz) was somewhat known.

God I hope not. You’d think this a bit more important than the “we’re breaking up” Schtick. Then again, you’d think not preying 14 and 15 years olds was common sense too.

I guess I didn't expect the professional-ness and understood why publications passed on it. I never knew anything about the Getaway Plan stuff and was interested in the comparison to Brand New and considering the outcomes. The rest of it is okay. I agree that the Andy Greenwald critique is much more interesting.

The last paragraph swings an axe and completely misses. It undoes the comparison it made earlier with Lacey and Zimmerman and was so unnecessary.

I don't really want to read it if it's as bad as everyone says, but did something happen with Camp Cope?? I'm stunned seeing that name along with the others in the tweet.

No they are just mentioned in the article..

Terrible she put them in the tweet like that tho, it’s pretty misleading

There's another one that something happened but I couldn't piece it together what was going on. Not Thrice, not MO, not TBS, not Green though. Pointless speculation though.

Nah, article is extremely well written and most of all, in my opinion, needed. Camp Cope is a band with a woman as the vocalist from Australia, yes? They have a bad ass song mentioned there.

I'd highly recommend that article's reading. Difficult readings and readings that make you uncomfortable are necessary, and even more so in times like this. Writer has a poignant point, there's something to be said about a songwriter that made a career out of abusing young women and getting away with the kind of lyrical content he had because of how he postured himself instead of what he was singing. It's a provocative reading, but one I feel like it's extremely needed.

Women as muses or someone they can abuse, hate or not even see is a thematic running theme from 2000s emo. Some bands matured past that, others never did. Her point is important because she defies concepts that we know, and I feel like some bands evolved way past that phase. The truth is that if you look at most Brand New's catalogue (and songs like Vices and Bought A Bride make me think Lacey was more involved with that record than the fairytale that Vinnie wrote everything, it's well documented that Lacey work WITH Vin not that most lyrics are his) is a bunch of literal mysoginistic imagery where woman either the reason he is several shades of heartbroken and it's almost like there's a license for him to do that because since they are their muses, he "needs" that to his craft.

It's not an easy reading, but some of the best are like this imho.

shes saying that they are speaking out against it in the article, but on the tweet it just sort of throws them together and look above, someone was like wait what happened with camp cope. and what if people didn't know that band and just saw the tweet they may just write them off bc they are grouping them together with brand new and no confidence. or whatever the heck they are called.

I didn't know the camp cope. Was intrigued when I hear it and loved the song. IDK, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

its def not a big deal, but I could see how someone could get confused if they didn't read the article. Just saying.

I don't think people are saying they struggle with the content, they struggle with her skills as a writer... She covers a lot of good ground but it is a bit all over the place.

I also play in an Australian 'emo' band (more like super-sad indie) and it is a super diverse scene. I feel that a lot of broad strokes are made in that regard too.

I'm truly disappointed in the rest of the band for not putting something out by now. It's been a fucking week already. You're not playing shows again after this. And if they do I'll be outside every one in Chicago reminding everyone that Jesse is a fucking predator and the band stood by him.
