Completely agree. But man I had no idea about that story. Extremely fucked up.

If Anita Sarkeesian happened to scene culture instead of just gaming / tv / film culture, maybe we'd have realized that something was off sooner. If we believed the anonymous accounts and digged further back then, maybe we'd have realized that sooner.

I will be the first to say that I was kinda bothered with Sarkeesian's analysis of games back then when it blew up. I stood by her right to critique the medium and against the gators, but I only realized how much of gaming culture is shitty after one year of the whole gator debacle that was the inception of alt-right. Then I discovered that everything is shitty, not long after that. Then she started making one hell lot more of sense. It's so obvious now that I feel like an idiot.

Man, I remember when I agreed when you posted it was shitty of the head guy at AP to post this...completely different context now. He needs to be outed.

I knew of the rumors with Derrick just from hints people dropped on AP at the time. Again I chalked it up to "man Jesse seems like kind of an asshole, that's too bad." That's waaaaaaaaay different from soliciting minors and then holding power over them in order to get your sexual needs filled for years.

  6. Yep. That calculus for me changed when I found out everything else. Before it was like, ok that was in the past, it’s bad, but it’s past and not career ending/tabloid stuff. But with all the new revelations, and shit I’ve heard, fuck it - it plays to the character then and now.

So Jason, do you just have an inbox full of people relaying stories of Jesse being a scumbag or is it all of the music industry at this point?

  8. Many bands. One big big big scene band. But not many want to come forward on the record. (Gee I wonder why.) But they wanted me to know. :-/

  9. I'm not gonna lie, I first read that Derrick rumor after Geoff seemed to make a slight reference to it on the Vinyl, Me Please podcast. And I really, really tried shrugging it off as just two consenting adults hooking up, because once upon a time (though I am fortunate enough to never have cheated/been cheated on), I did consider that kind of thing to be "morally ambiguous" rather than emotionally abusive. I used to try and justify others' actions by saying you never know the situation, you never know what's pushing someone away, etc. But it created this strange sort of dissonance between myself and Science Fiction that I never fully shook, and it took at least a month for me to come back around to to the album. I'm sure it's partially due to growing up and getting married next year, but deep down, I'm glad I had the gut reaction I did and that I'm starting to recognize situations like that as a form of emotional abuse (largely made possible by listening to people like @Anna Acosta and @kaylasananjou ).

And then these allegations were made, which are obviously an entirely different level of abuse.

Yeah sadly it's not really all that surprising. It is weird some want you to know specifically but don't want to go public (I mean just looking at how people have torn down every victim of Jesse in a week I get it) but it's kind of weird to me they want you to know. I guess they might just need to tell someone to get it off their chest

  11. I think it’s so I don’t stupidly call someone a good person or feminist or anything like that with a history of the opposite as well.

Ha yeah I guess it's good for you to have a heads up so you don't write something glowing about someone in the future and then need to retract it.

Saw some odd stuff on twitter about people disappointed because they saw Lacey as an ally, as in feminist ally. I mean, am I missing something here? Has Lacey ever spoken about feminism ever? Or was just people projecting on him what they wanted to see through the imagery that he allowed to be seen as? That's why I feel like people like Kid Rock are trash, but at least they don't hide it. "Oh they are reclusive and don't talk with the fans". FUCK THAT. They knew the image they had. They knew how powerful that image was and used that for personal gain. I can't buy into the whole fan fiction that they weren't aware of the image that existed around them. Not any longer.

Never googled kid rock my entire life. Googled "kid rock feminism" since I knew that he was trash. Worked like a charm.

At the very least, they seemed fairly progressive, donating funds to charity when Martin Shrekli said he was a big fan of them and booking acts like Julien Baker as their opener.

I think some of it was projecting, as well as assuming his beliefs were similar to people he’s close with like his wife or Kevin Devine.

As for actually speaking about women’s issues, the band lists the National Org for Women as a charity they support in the Science Fiction liner notes. Also, I remember awhile back on Instagram they posted about some women’s guitar magazine:

A lot of times men get praised for doing the bare minimum when it comes to women’s rights. For example, the feminist Ryan Gosling meme from a few years ago.

Quick question, not sure if you can answer it, but I have seen this podcast mentioned a lot since the accusations last week. But it seems like it's nowhere to be found online. Did Brand New/Jesse have the episode deleted? Because it seems like it was wiped off the internet

@Jason Tate you we’re alluding to allegations being made to another huge scene band a few pages ago, just please tell me it isn’t Manchester Orchestra
