Delighted Italy lost. Delighted the goal went in off De Rossi after his antics in the first half.

If the Ivory Coast don't score 3 goals, Morocco is heading to the world cup

Tunisia might be knocked out too if Libya score a goal

Can't wait to lose now after our rugby team annihilated South Africa

It's amazing how referees miss the simplest things. Massive deflection on shot and it's a goal kick?

Sweden played great. Shame for Buffon, but fuck the rest of them.

Yeah Buffon is the only one I care for. Was great to see him shaking hands with the whole Sweden team at the end.

Buffon retired from Italy. I got a little misty eyed typing that.

Had no idea about the Buffon fascist rumours so I looked them up and ehhhh, I guess I believe him when he says it was naivety/ignorance:

"Buffon is by no means perfect. As a 21-year-old at Parma he wore a t-shirt emblazoned with a neo-fascist logo, and chose to wear 88 on his shirt — a number that has neo-Nazi connotations. He explained both as naivety and ignorance; he has not made a similar gesture since, with both of these events now 15 years past. Maybe he was simply unaware of the meaning"

The t-shirt? IDK, that's the one I am suspicious of. But I had no idea about the number 88 and it's neo-Nazi connotations, and I don't feel like that is common knowledge to the point that ignorance to it would be a bullshit excuse (I've used the number 88 for stuff before because 1988 is the year I was born, and I'd be mortified if someone accused me of using it for that other purpose!!!).

He's the greatest goalkeeper of all time for me, and an icon of football in my lifetime, so maybe I'm doing that thing where I believe it isn't true because I don't want it to be true though :tear:

Italy don't deserve to be there, end of. I honestly think the talk around Buffon is so over dramatic lately. Well done Sweden.

Someone joked about having an NIT bracket next summer considering some of the "powerhouses" that didn't make it to Russia. People (surprise) took the joke far too seriously.

(For those who don't know, the next sixteen teams that don't make the March Madness tournament play in the NIT tournament around the same time.)

College basketball. Every March, the top 68 teams in the US play in a single elimination tournament (NCAA March Madness) to crown that national champ. The next 16 “just missed” teams play in a consolation tourney called the NIT for shits and giggles.

Oh, cheers, that makes sense now.

You could make a great tournament to be fair. Chile, Holland, Italy, Ivory Coast, USA, plus the losers of Denmark vs Ireland, Honduras vs Australia, and Peru vs New Zealand.

That was their point. Ghana and Greece, too. I don’t want it to happen, but on paper those are some big names.

I quickly done it by the FIFA Rankings, so the 16 top ranked teams that didn't make it would be...

Chile, Peru, Wales, Italy, Denmark(*), Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Ireland(*), USA, Scotland, Ukraine, Senegal, Turkey, Congo DR, Paraguay. (Bulgaria take the place of either Denmark or Ireland).

Would be a nice knock-out tournament.

I think tonight can go one of two ways. We score early and defend for our lives succumbing to a last minute away goal winner by Denmark or, they hammer us.
