I don’t have a Brand New tattoo but one of my favorite musicians recently liked a bunch of David Duke and transphobic tweets and I have a tattoo of his band and I’ve found myself constantly going back and forth on covering it up or keeping it the past few weeks. It’s been a constant internal struggle.

 

I didn't read it .. ok I skimmed some of it .. ok I read like four. Using band names and certain words pulls up this website all the time, because it has alllllll the keywords you could think of. My god.

SoL with regards to sexual crimes concerning minors is on a state-by-state basis. My state, Illinois, just changed the law so there is no SoL.

 

It's also just so illogical. Like there is no thought or reason put into what they are saying.

 

My advisor in college was a pop culture professor and literally wrote books on how disgusting erotic fan fiction is.

 

I've known about it for a while. Mostly because I've actually read fanfiction about movies and stuff. Some of them are really well written. And some of them are disturbing.

The ones focused on real people are on another level of disturbing though.

 

I'm close to purposing to my long time girlfriend, when I think about how I want to be a father, husband, human being, I think about Dustins lyrics a lot, Thrice and solo.

I wouldn't say you shouldn't have a favorite anything but you need to be able to not separate the person/people from the art and be able to cut that out of your life. I have no regrets about making this decision regarding any garbage person I once appreciated.

Actually fair point. I’m hoping even the majority of the people on that subreddit start to wake up in the coming days... but I’ve been disappointed before.

 

Brought this up with my girlfriend the other day. It's easy to forget.

 

The band's communication distance makes so much sense now. Most likely born from Jesse's fear of exposure, guilt, and later necessity, the whole Brand New enigma now appears to simply be the typical reclusive monolith of manipulation/control, representative of someone with these issues. The orchestration is not appealing at all in hindsight, everything is tainted.

$1 pogoliths? Tainted.
"You'll get it when it's finished"? Tainted.
Specifically the full album shows, where he sang YFW/Deja/TDAG/Daisy front to back? Hell, forget tainted, that was a slap to the face of his victims.

I keep lurking this thread because I don't really have anyone to talk to about this and it's been eating at me since Friday. I keep looking for an answer to if I can still have this music be a part of my life or not, but I know that's all on me to figure out. I don't think of Jesse at all when I listen to his songs, especially when I listen to TDAG, I think of the experiences I have tied to them and to those lyrics. TDAG got me through years of depression. I have an emotional memory tied to every second of that album. So I can listen to it and not feel weird, I think, but I would feel guilty because I know I shouldn't, yknow? If it was a band that meant less to me I'd delete all their music and forget about it. No questions asked. I wish it were that easy right now.

Either way I'm not ready to try and listen right now, though. In the meantime I'm trying to find another suitably dark and loud record to fill that hole. My other "depression albums" are quiet and introspective, I need more music to vent through.

 

It took my sister an entire day to finally get around to accepting that Jesse was terrible. At first, she said she didn't care and would still listen to the music. But by the next day, she had accepted it was impossible to get over what he did.
