I have heard things about some of those bands in passing. Are the ones you listed all for sure things? I have not heard anything about Yellowcard? I am not doubting you, I am just curious.

 

This statement is bullshit. He made himself the victim. I’m supposed to feel sorry for him that he’s a shitty person who preyed on underaged girls?

I really don’t interpret it that way. I think he said what he needed to say and I am glad he is getting help. Nothing he could have said would make this completely better but he at least took a step forward in accepting responsibility

 

Welp. Fuck Jesse Lacey. That's a very well written statement but come on, we all know the guy is a good writer who has a way with words. I realize that there are most likely legal implications behind why he worded things the way that he did and said what he said, but I just can't help but see the entire thing as 100% completely self-serving.

What he did is so heinous and so severe and so *wrong* that I just don't think anything other than completely laying it all out on the line in plain words is good enough. Even that phrase is problematic because a statement will never be 'good enough' compared to the anguish he caused another soul. But a statement that completely lays bare what you have done, regardless of any legal or moral implications, one that shreds any sense of self-preservation and fancy wordplay to just put it out there and ask for forgiveness would possibly be the smallest step in the right direction.

I am not a lawyer and don't know the laws surrounding this type of thing, but I don't think even if he said what he did and how old the person was that anything legal can happen to him unless the person presses charges. But laying it all out there without concern for legal repercussions against yourself would be a much more sincere sign of actually being sorry and wanting forgiveness.

As a human being this whole situation is so sickening and disheartening to me. 15 years old. I'm a nurse who works in the mental health and addiction field and I work with some 18 year olds who seem like babies to me.

 

tryna say basically we were two years apart technically but it was a 16-18 (before her 17th bday) thing for about 3 months each where I felt weird. (my bday being in may hers in august), a dating in high school/im going away to college after the school year thing.
jesse being a grown rockstar where he clearly knew the victim he targeted was underage was wrong and really fucked up. i dont see why hed be so dumb, fuck an addiction to sex, thats why his "statement" was so weak. your addiction dont mean shit to someone being legal or not, you could be with anyone... why did you have to target someone underage? his statement begged for sympathy for having an addiction not acknowledging an addiction is one thing but making a conscious decision to go after someone underage for the better part of a decade is something else.

im just as lost as everyone else. tryna understand cus hell, how do these people even think this shit will never see the light of day, not to mention the ties to the band and music? im just so lost on all this.

 

I hate how everyone is bringing up lyrics. His lyrics don't incriminate him. His actions do.

 

If you're looking for a great song for tonight, I'd recommend this one.

 

In my state it's the same way, except it starts at 13 years old, and then the actual age is 16. (I'm in High School who's had to give advice to friends so I'm not just a random weirdo who googles consent laws)

 

Definitely, total speculation as well... That said, its par for the course considering the jarring level of everything going on.

I don't see the point of "laying it all out on the line." Then people will attack him for trying to tell the story "his way." Him not denying any allegations puts weight behind the victim's recount of the story. His first paragraph addresses the victims, and his following paragraphs explain that he has since sought help and does not forgive himself. What else do you want? Nothing is going to change what he did. Ripping apart statements with (seemingly) good intent is literally the most counter-productive thing you can do. No matter what he says people are going to be opinionated because he did some shitty stuff.

 

Especially when they're Vins lyrics.

 

Hold up, where you hearing all this? I have a hard time believing The Starting Line engaged in any creepy (or criminal) behavior.

Hate to get on some age-ist shit, but Stan Lee is about 80 years old to be Spider Man, hell if he was I'd be infinitely impressed and he's automatically my hero lol.

I think we need to mention here how you can feel bad for both the victim and Jesse. One does not negate the others. Jesse had a very real disease and I get both sides. I’m glad he is getting help, and i hope she gets the closure she needs from this to move on and feel safe.

I haven't seen anyone particularly bringing up lyrics in order to incriminate.

More-so to bring to light how messages we've created in our minds have been changed for good.

I remember Ariel Pink saying something about how sexual predators might have a mental health issues years ago and maybe we should be more sympathetic and I remember being like "....Ugh don't even try to explain that shit...." I don't know if I can give Jesse that excuse since underage is pretty cut and dry. But hell. You can't really dispute the whole "You should've known better regardless, man." angle.
I've battled addiction (albeit not sex addiction) to other things too, but I never did wrong to ppl who didnt deserve it..... so I struggle to give Jesse anything there.

I visited the statement on facebook, saw one comment with someone thinking they were hilarious saying, "That's great, but when is my Science Fiction vinyl being delivered?" and gave up.
