There's absolutely a selfishness there because people are trying to process. I know I sure the fuck am... this band has literally been part of the reason I'm still alive. Not to be too argumentative because emotions are raw, but I don't think anyone's said they were hoping to just be able to do the bolded.

For your own sanity and health, don't read the comments on the Facebook post of the statement.

Yeah. I totally get that. As someone who’s been in an abusive relationship, I wouldn’t want the person coming back and trying to apologize to me now that I think of it. I don’t know anymore.

within minutes of the statement being up people were justifying why they will support someone who abused an underage person. That seems self serving and short sighted.

    Any lawyers in here?

I want to know if he just could not legally address things in detail.

i really was hoping he would resolve it with the victim in private tbh but at least the statement we got was very good.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the Facebook comments, which is a cesspool, or in here. Generally, this thread has been the only thing keeping me from going off the deep end with this news and I'm actually really proud of 98% of the people in it.

As someone who has fucked up alot in his life alot too, I also respect his ability to own up to what he did and seek help. This statement isn't perfect, but I feel like in a legal sense he said what he was allowed to say and he did a fair job of showing that he regrets his actions. It won't fix his past, nor will it repair thr damage done, but it's a good start to trying to move forward and be a better person. I believe that people can change. I hope Jesse does for the better.

i thought the statement was great (not perfect) because it doesnt sound like lawyer speak. i can tell jesse wrote this.

At the end of the day, there's no playbook for this and literally nothing anyone can do to get it right...just varying degrees of how wrong your apology can be. If their latest album and this statement is anything to go by, he's been in therapy for a while and presumably has tried to figure it out. I'm most concerned with the people that Jesse has abused finding a measure of peace in the idea that fact that their abuse is being acknowledged and brought to light.

I heard there's a fix for everything. Then why, then why, then why not me?

A lawyer in here earlier said Jesse could still get in legal trouble even though it happened however many years ago, if that helps clarify anything...

I'm a lawyer, but the only obvious thing I can think of is that by specifically addressing the situation with Nicole, he'd be admitting to criminal acts. He was most likely advised to refrain from addressing that.

i will say if this is something that happened within the last few years i would be reacting completely differently. it is very important to make the current scene as safe as possible and stamp out abusers and toxic individuals. relentlessly going after jesse for something he did over a decade ago doesnt do this. we should look at this, assess it, discuss it, let people feel how they feel, and figure out how to continue making the scene a better place TODAY. i fear too much attention on wrongdoings from so long ago distracts from the horrible shit happening today. not that you cant focus on two things at once but one clearly has more weight in current events than the other.

Anyone knows what annoys me the most?

Everyone was all up in arms yesterday cause one Facebook response went viral and responding and denouncing the band was seen as the morally righteous thing to do, because the community (correctly) was supporting the victim.

But I doubt most of us would have the same reaction if we saw an offhand tweet and got significantly less attention, let alone an admission. We's probably let it slip from our heads as social media shenanigans. All of the allegations regarding Louis CK and Harvey Weinstein going back to the late 00s prove this. I'm probably guilty of this too regarding the situation with Neck Deep's old guitarist. And we all would feel the same way if someone made these allegations against someone in our family.

And I'm not saying these instincts are correct. But it's a shame so many may only make a judgement if we're put in a situation where we have to.

My abuser never apologized. I don't expect them to ever do so.

I don't quite think I'd know what to say, or do if that were to happen.

Maybe I don't want them to at all.. I'm so used to living in my world now, where things are the way they are.

Still processing my feelings on the statement, but I'm standing next to someone at this show who I heard talking about them and is wearing their shirt. Based on what I heard him say he seems unaware or unphased by the allegations and I can't really imagine a convo about them that doesn't address it right now, so it's a huge bummer cus normally this would be awesome and I could chat away with a new friend about Brand New.

It's a shame this is the topic that got us back to almost solely focusing on Brand New in this thread again. Wish it could've been anything but... horrific, tragic, but despite the hurt I want the victim to feel empowered and welcome to share her pain and the allegations to have their chance to play out.

"You're just a monster, in a costume. Ashamed of what you used to be."

These lyrics once held special value to me, and now they're engrained in my head as something entirely different.
