As an English teacher of primarily students who rarely like to read on their own, her books have influenced a ton of them to read/write poetry. So, uh, nah.

That’s awesome. I’m glad to hear it. I also think it’s great that a woman of color is getting so much attention in the literary world. I don’t want to take away from that despite how I personally feel, so I’ll shut my mouth about it.

As a poor man who graduated with a history degree after switching from English, who the fuck is Rupi Kaur?

See, this is something that is interesting about Rupi that I was talking about with my friend, a woman of color and an active poet, who feels that she’s “bad” for poetry. Despite her feelings towards Rupi, she acknowledged that her 13 year old self probably would have found enjoyment in the simplicity of her work. Obviously large groups of people seem to latch onto it, but I find it to be pretty vapid, just judging from the pieces I’ve read, mind you.

It’s somewhat ironic that I mention vapidity and then proceed to post a Buzzfeed article but I found this to be an interesting read.

I feel like getting people into a certain art form is a different accomplishment than actually making good art.

Like, sure Linkin Park have gotten a lot of people into (good) music but that doesn’t inherently make their music of value.

I’ve seen from several WOC that she steals their shit so that’s why I don’t like her.

Homie. When I was like 8 or whatever, I never thought I’d hear a more emotionally captivating song than Under The Bridge lol

Rupi Kaur - plagiarism accusations notwithstanding - is an ok poet but i'm glad for any path people use to follow art. that said, there are issues with how her poetry reduces South Asian female identity to something easily consumable for white Americans (this is a good write up), and there are woc poets of a much higher quality than she that i hope folks find through reading her.

poetry has been something that saved my life from the edge numerous times.

Months back it seemed like there was a bunch of backlash toward the simplicity of Kaur’s work - generally from snarky white Twitter personalities - and it just seemed shitty. The Buzzfeed piece above is a good read, and the plagiarism aspect is one that deserves to be explored.

Idk I don’t think she is exempt from criticism, but targeting a young WOC poet, who maybe a gateway for others, for the retweets and likes, just seems...gross

Honestly I’m not a video game person at all. Never owned anything past the GameCube. I enjoy playing sports games and Mario related stuff but I don’t think I’ll ever drop money on a system

Well he asked me as if I knew him so at first I thought he was asking about an actual person. But then I used my detective work to sus out what he meant. I am fluent in the language of children. It is a gift and a curse!!
