They were friends again before the two songs were even released.

 

Probably not worth responding to, but man, so many people saying "lol she lying because they don't play brand new in bars, lol" when I hardly ever go to bars and have heard Sic Transit Gloria at least 3 times in different bars in different cities in different states. Last time was this summer in Milwaukee. But again irrelevant

 

I don't think Jesse doing this shit is automatically cause for everybody around him to be blamed. People hide shit. Nobody knows somebody 100% and this would probably not be something he told anybody about.

 

The weird shit people come up with is weird.

 

I'm more surprised about not being surprised. Does that make any sense?

Jason can I ask if you are working on a like long form piece on this or anything? Not that you owe it to us on the site or anything just I like reading people's feelings on this issue that I think might have a same thinking on this as me. As in like I guess I'm struggling with the whole fact that I've loved this band and all acts associated with them and now I'm not sure if I can still enjoy them and I also don't know if I can just write them off entirely. A part of me wants to think "oh well it was years ago" and then I feel guilty. I don't know this just sucks .

 

Yeah we'll see about that. I was at a kids birthday party at a trampoline place and heard at least 3 MJ songs.

 

That’s something I think only John would know most about. And yeah, he might have not known to what extent this all was. Their “friendship” may have just been civil too. We may never know or understand.

With myself, one my oldest and best friends from my childhood turned into a giant POS as we got older. Screwed over tons of people, including friends and family, by going behind their backs and lying all the time. Turned out he did not treat women well and was addicted to sex to a point he would manipulate women into sex. He eventually came out to us about it all bc people started talking. People literally contacted me and those closest to him expressing their concerns and experiences with him. These were people we never even met or maybe met one time through him. We confronted him and had an intervention about it.

It’s really hard hearing about stuff like that, but you always have to listen to those saying they’ve been effected and offer support in anyway you can. So yeah, turned out it was all true. He still reaches out every now and then, but the lines were drawn years ago. We were brothers. Part of me will always have a some sense of care and hope that he gets or has gotten the help he needed and that those he effected were able to find some peace and felt supported when they came to me and my other friends. Really sad position to be in across the board.

 

I do think it's kind of odd that he spoke up about this but still works with GNR, considering this story from years ago:

The "Skype wasn't even around in 02" argument is the one that I've had to hold back from responding to.

 

I think trying to bring up things like "well if people on Long Island knew" or "why would friends reconcile" is a little off-topic. Nothing is ever black and white. Nobody wants to be the first one to call out basically a local legend, or completely dismiss a friend off of the way they acted years ago, as they want to see the best in people.

This is strictly between Jesse's power as an "alt god" and the victim. The best we can hope for is a well crafted statement that atones for what Jesse did, shows fault and a desire to get better, which also gives the victim a peace she probably hasn't felt in years.

I would hope that through some miracle, Jesse would find the proper things to do and say that would allow the victim to feel at peace with what happened and allow Brand New to still be a band, but with the way things are, I truly doubt it.

 

The fact that this news will end the band's career early is interesting. Allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior haven't stopped FOB or RHCP.

 

Even worse is when they're like "she claimed Jesse was 24 at the time.... but he was 25 when Skype came out." Like seriously?

 

Still working through thoughts, I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to them the same as before, but only time will tell.

We're living in different times now that we're post-Weinstein. I have a feeling that Hollywood and politics are just the first steps to a long process of recovery for millions of victims.

 

Yeah I get that 100% I think a lot of people are just trying to work through it in the thread so I'm glad to see how the majority of folks here are handling it.

 

I don't know his work/relationship with anyone else and don't really wanna spend my time judging him or whatever at this time. The but whataboutyoudoingthis seems like misplaced anger to me right now.

 

You know I'm right there with everyone else saying that this band is over, that the tour is cancelled and we'll never hear from them again.....but then you go on reddit and see how little so many of these fans care, and then a lot who are just oblivious to whats happening. This afternoon I was texting all my friends who are die hard BN fans saying shit like "this Jesse Lacey news is heartbreaking" and every single one of them responded with "what news?"

There was Michael Jackson with the pedophile allegations, then there was Chris Brown with the Rihanna incident, both somehow continued to have amazing careers despite these awful things. I for sure would abandon them, but are we just a select group of good people with good morals? Will a majority of their fan base just not give a shit about the victims and continue to support them?

 

I was like a bunch of those people last night that I just hadn't seen anything because I hadn't checked this site yesterday. I saw Jason say something on twitter like "today was bad" but didn't see any other tweets from him about it so I was just like kind of figured he was just having a bad day. Opened the reddit app on my phone in bed late and say a post about it. Those comments were awful so I came here to confirm. Then broke the news to someone this morning so I can see how people who aren't up on news could miss it.

 

Do we all believe that the rest of Brand New is innocent here?

If they decide to call it quits then they are over. But if they did one last tour next year I guarantee they would still attract a huge crowd. They have plenty of casual fans that might not even hear about this.

 

I'm awaiting a statement from the band before I blame the rest of the band. This was a new accusation involving minors and I don't think anybody heard that before.

 

If they make a statement, they'll for sure deny any knowledge. But that just can't be true. When you are stuck spending every day with a dude for 100 days out of the year, for a period of 15 years, you pick up their behavior and morals.
