think of how tired, exhausted and frustrated the majority of us non-victimized fans are today and THEN imagine what that brave woman is going through right now - not even over the last 10+ years, but just RIGHT NOW - all the texts, emails, messages, tweets that have to be flooding her accounts. think of how tired, scared, confused and frustrated (and hopefully a bit liberated) she must be right now.

i can't even imagine.

note: i don't mean this as a slight to those who had to leave / take a break from the thread and website, but i'm trying to think and hope that the woman has a great support system around her because her revealing this information has probably completely flipped her world for at least the next week or so from a "now everyone knows a lot of what i know" standpoint.

This is automatically making excuses for their behavior when that have not said a single word about it. This is part of the problem. Nobody is claiming addiction in any way and you're making that an excuse for it. Stop.
Sex addiction does not make you a pedophile.
Cheating on your wife does not make you a pedophile.
Writing dark lyrics does not make you a pedophile.
Being famous in a band does not make you a pedophile.

 

You would think that in addition to the victims account being evidence that the other musicians & techs who know or have worked with the band and have heard similar things would be enough "evidence" for these people.

 

I actually broke the news to a friend who was assaulted and her response actually surprised me. She was irritated that the victim allowed it to go on for so long. I'll admit I had the question at first but then thought of the power balance and how someone you look up to telling you they can't wait for you to become of age so you can hook up is a total power play. I don't know she seemed to imply that her trauma was worse since she didn't get to decide who assaulted her since it was a stranger. It made me kind of sad that one victim was looked at that way by another victim but I guess we have strange ways to justify things when heroes let us down.

I know it’s ridiculous but have been feeling guilt this morning for all the time, devotion, love, and money I’ve poured into this band over the last 15 years.
I did a rough calculation on what I thought I would be spending on this band over the next year, and made a donation to Safe Horizon. It doesn’t make any of this better, but it’s a good cause anyway.

It sounds awful but at this point I want whatever statement comes out to be awful. Not because I don't want Jesse to be better, but because it'd make it much easier to be less conflicted about this on an issue I really shouldn't be conflicted on.

I hope the statement is good and earnest so that the victim can find a little solace.

 

I’m very uncomfortable with the lightheartedness of all the comments on Diaz’s post. The majority are jokes and gifs and mocking BN lyrics. Most of them insinuate too that they knew a lot about these actions. So instead of doing something about it, they make jokes?

I've seen a lot of comments talking about how "so many people in the LI scene seem to be commenting so they must have known this is true" and I wonder if that is actually true. Like I 100% think that a lot of people in the scene don't like Jesse because he can be a total asshole but I mean I feel like this is totally different. Like Jason said he had always heard stuff that maybe he was a dick but never solicitation of a minor. I believe the victim it's just weird to see what from the outside looks like people being smug about it rather than I don't know just disgusted.

 

Yeah I just posted something similar. Like I'm having issues with people seemingly being smug and happy that it came out. Like I understand thinking he's an asshole if you interacted with him in the scene before but like did they know about this and then like just brush it off then and now are going to laugh about it while the girl has to relive this all over?

 

If I had to guess, I'd say Brand New has stopped being a band by now. And despite everything they've meant to me in the past, I'm glad. Always support the victims.

It's not like a statement is going to mend anything, but at least it could make some of those diehard fans who are still defending Jesse (see: r/brandnew) change their mind and be less shitty about this whole situation.

the surfacing of whisper networks over the past month is, like, obviously Very Good but psychologically it has been fucking horrible to endure and social media smugness from male allies makes it much worse imo
