My wife literally asked me yesterday who would leave me the most devastated to learn is a sexual abuser. I told her Andy Hull and Jesse Lacey, simply because they have dominated the majority of my musical listening for all of my adult life and soundtracked some of my dearest memories/moments.

I feel so many things on a personal level (among them, betrayal and shame taking center stage), but then intense sadness for who has been affected by this. I still have to process so much about this story, but I can say that it is refreshing to see that the majority of responses to all of these allegations coming out against abusers seems to skew towards the defense of the victim and denouncement of the accused. It could just be my selective memory of what I’ve read so far, but that’s the impression I’ve got today. I think that seeing that people who have the power and position of a Weinstein, Spacey or Louis has given survivors some hope to see something done about the people who have used them.

I’m glad to know that we have this space to struggle together and grow when these accusations are made against people we’ve admired for a long time. Officially taking them out of my rotation and hoping that their peers do what’s right in this situation.

Had this same conversation yesterday because a friend of mine (amateur stand-up) was hit really hard by the Louis CK news. Jesse was the person I thought of. And now it's happened.

Still processing the news. Feel really shaken, sad, disappointed and angry. I can't bring myself to say much right now, so I'll quote my post from the article's thread

 

Yup. With the speed that abusers are being taken to task recently we had a feeling it would hit close to home with someone I or we really admired soon.

 

I do not believe that andy hull is responsible for a statement, I think Kevin Devine will make one tho

 

I already felt that “close to home” one with Screen Junkies. Especially since I’ve interacted with multiple victims of his and one in particular has been such a help to me.

I dont come to this thread usually, but im glad we are all here for eachother. And if someone needs to talk more privately about their feelings on this, DM me.

I cannot promise i will say anything of note, but we can vent together.

We are all angry, upset, disgusted. But i am glad that victims are conibg forward and not being persecuted by most.

I think that people can make a statement without making a statement. Make a statement by saying your Bandcamp proceeds will go to a clinic for survivors of sexual abuse or something, you know. Take a stance and don’t put your self in a position where you appear complicit.

 

I don't think other artists should be entitled to make a statement but I appreciate when they do.

The abusers 100% should and I really hope BN gets on with it sooner rather than later (or at all)

I don’t want to say who I listened to this evening.

SF was my favorite album of the year. Baby Driver was my favorite movie of the year. And Screen Junkies was the YT channel I followed and viewed daily.

I think the band I jammed is safe. It would be a huge shock if they were involved in something like this.

 

Frustrating amount of irony in that this is what Brand New did with some T-shirt profits after Martin Shkreli was seen wearing one of their shirts around the time of the price gouging issue.

 

Feel free to google, there was A LOT.

They stopped producing for a few weeks and relaunched only a couple weeks ago with that monster no longer involved in any way.

Shit. So much of their recent history feels like a cover up for this and a subtle nod to it as well.

 

I want to think that the rest of the band didn't know about this but like, fuck it went on for so long the chances of that are somewhat slim eh

 

To be clear, I'm not saying anyone but Jesse/BN/Procrastinate need to make a statement. The process of separating yourself from an abuser is a personal one and takes time. I would just be surprised if they didn't say something.

 

I'm still pretty shocked by this. Its disgusting and I don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said. I hope they make a statement soon.

Was even considering the other day if Thursday was still my favorite band, even though I listen to Brand new more now.

Thursday sill #1 for me.

 

This has hugely upset me in many ways, and I think it's natural for myself and others who were greatly impacted by their music to selfishly consider what this means for your own personal connection with the band.

However, the discomfort that comes from these albums and artists being tainted pales in comparison and is completely irrelevant compared to the horrors faced by the victim(s) here. Glad everyone here is entirely behind her, and entirely against the cesspit that is a lot of the alternative music scene and Brand New.
