I think I learned one guitar chord when I started college, and then stopped playing when my mom walked in my room and made fun of me for trying to learn guitar and snapped a picture of me.

  2. I get where you're coming from. Entered my mind because my dad actually loves them. I don't really use it as a pejorative personally, but I know it mostly is.

My parents were THE WORST when I was trying to pick up guitar. Constantly saying that I was wasting my money and that I was going to give it up. Now I sing free-style dis-tracks about them to their faces.

Same here, except no dis tracks here haha...thing is, my dad was in a hair metal band right after college and around the time I was born. Lead singer. Loved playing music, but they thought I was a joke for trying. I guess because Fallen Angel, my dad's band, never panned out.

ELP are a frustrating one for me. They could be noodle-y and pretentious, and some of their interpolations of classical were ham-handed, but then sometimes they really nailed it. "Still...You Turn Me On", all of "Karn Evil Nine" and "The Endless Enigma", "I Believe in Father Christmas" and others are really top-level prog.

Emerson also did a tremendous amount to popularize the Moog, which I didn't know until yesterday, oddly enough.

Widespread Panic is a good jam band.

Everyone in my family has some kinda music talent except my brother. Though if he applied himself I'm sure he'd pick something up.

Every member of my family played 1 or 2 instruments in high school.

I currently play 5 instruments regularly with several offshoot play things like harmonicas and melodicas and shit.

I'm not really into jam bands but sometimes I stop on the Jam station on XM.

My grandmother toured Europe, the Middle East and South America with a production of West Side Story and played in orchestras her whole life.

My uncle has a p.h.d. in music and has had his symphonies performed and recorded by legit orchestras.

I feel like I'm drawing with crayons making pop music.

I don't quite understand why me simply saying that I can't get into her because I don't like her voice is something I shouldn't say here...

Tbh I also see myself as Abbi but I'll let you have her.

  15. The thing about all non-dead jam bands is none of them are close to the songwriters the dead were. A lot of them can play and jam but it doesn't really interest me unless the songs are great like with the dead.

This is why I can actually get down with the two Dead albums I'm into and have to much trouble with other jam bands besides The Allman Brothers and Santana (if they count).

I don't know if Santana counts or doesn't count but Chris and I basically rediscovered them last night

Hah even my dad who only made pop/rock at an amateur, self-recorded level was all-state and all-region in choirs growing up.

    I have a complex. Haha

Santana is a god in my family. We're also a Mexican family, so it's pretty common. My cousin is named Carlos, his brother's middle name is Augusto, their old dog was Santana

  23. Chris just mentioned them to me yesterday I think. i have to get more into them/him

I was saying to Eva that what's crazy about them is from his 00s resurgence I thought I knew what the "Carlos Santana guitar sound" was. And so did most people I know.

And then you listen to him on those first 3 albums and he's jazzy and ferocious and gutbucket and just dazzling and it's like there must have been a body snatcher style replacement at some point.

That's not what you said though? And that wasn't my point. But oh well.
