I can usually get onboard with dumb disaster movies (2012 is a guilty pleasure for me. Such a dumb movie), but Geostorm just looks beyond terrible.

It's got a few funny/ridiculous action scenes, but everything else is abysmal. It's not even fun to watch as a bad movie, it's just boring.

For as much money is at stake Hollywood is really bad with deciding where to allocate money. I know this is long, but one of my favorite speeches was from Steven Soderbergh when he initially retired about how clueless executives are about which movies to finance and which ones to reject. Perhaps the biggest problem is that movie studio executives do not particularly like movies, so they have a hard time gauging what audiences will like.

I have an assignment in my film to write about the digital effects in one movie and how they work narratively in the film and in the grand scheme of filmmaking. I have ideas, but does anyone have anything rad that comes to mind

    Is Fandor worth a shit?

They're offering a deal to Movie Pass customers where you can get an entire year for $24.

I think it’s got a great selection but I don’t know how much it would be if interest to most people around here.

For $24, I may just bite the bullet and take a chance. I'm sure I can watch a handful of films over the course of the year to get my money's worth.

Hugo?? For some reason that was the first thing that popped into my head. I think that the digital effects on the automaton and that train sequence are really well done. Underrated movie in general tbh

When do we start a best of 2017 for films? Not that I expect finalized lists as there is still so much to be readily available that will impact them but I always enjoy using the thread as a means to catch up

Best of lists are creeping up almost as much as Christmas. Early December is usually the earliest you see any lists.

Fair enough, know its way early, just trying to make myself a list of what to watch that is available. Easy for things to slip through the cracks in this medium especially

I use them as well. Even critics are forced to wait until pretty close to last minute for the films that come out in late December just to qualify for Academy Awards. A lot of critics published their lists last year without even seeing Silence, a film that really needed that kind of support.

Makes total sense, I just used Letterboxd to make a detailed list of films I need to see divided into the columns of what is available now and what I still don't have access to. Just wish there was something more comprehensive rather than everybody scrambling in December

The Florida Project, Wonderstruck, Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lady Bird, Last Flag Flying, Three Billboards...it’s stacked these next few weeks and I don’t know when the heck I’ll be able to tackle all of this.
