    run away with me Platinum

Not sure where I'd rank this or how to rank it, Michelle Pfeiffer is definitely up there in top performances though

I need to see more movies from this year but I rarely know what's out and what's good until EOTY lists.

I have sooooo many movies left to see, no way this stays in my top 10. Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Lady Bird, Downsizing, Mudbound, The Shape of Water, The Post, The Florida Project, Blade Runner 2049, Three Billboards..., Battle of the Sexes, The Phantom Thread, Molly's Game, Happy End, Wonder Wheel.

And that's just off the top of my head.

I'm sure plenty of people here and in other threads can recommend films from this year, my tastes are mainstream so anything I recommend would be obvious.

  5. #4 out of 48 for me. It moved up after sitting on it for a while.

You're not the only one who was laughing. These guys liked it, though.

48 in theatres? Or 48 movies released in 2017?

  7. 48 released in 2017. I've seen probably 25ish of those in theaters.

I was just thinking about Aronofsky and von Trier parallels.

    here's my take:

Sprawling and divisive, mother! is definitely Aronofsky's most ambitious film, but it fails to be as emotional as his most affecting film, Requiem for a Dream, or as intriguing as his most compelling film, Black Swan.

Sprawling and divisive, Nymphomaniac is definitely von Trier's most ambitious film, but it fails to be as emotional as his most affecting film, Dancer in the Dark, or as intriguing as his most compelling film, Melancholia.

Actually, no, maybe not. I keep flip-flopping on it; mother! might be Aronofsky's Antichrist for me because I like Nymphomaniac quite a bit. I didn't "like" mother!, I thought it was incredible (like, in a good way), and I probably won't ever want to watch it again.

Anyway, I personally think the media's reaction is entirely understandable. The movie is completely bonkers.

edit: here's another parallel (albeit a personal one, but hasn't this entire post just been personal opinion so far, anyway?): I've yet to see The Fountain or Dogville.

I didn't know shit about this film and went in blind. I actually didn't want to watch it because I had heard about the bad reviews, but the wife wanted to go with some friends so I obliged.

We both loved it. It was intense as all hell and hit on like every phobia lol. I don't particularly care for Lawrence or really think she's a great actress but I thought she was amazing in this. I deep dove into all the Biblical stuff after the fact and kinda just flew by the seat of my pants while watching, but holy hell it was a fun ride.

I finally got around to seeing this. Didn't particularly love or hate it, but I don't really understand the over the top negative reviews.

I can see not liking it, but this is far from the "worst movie of the century"

Don't be embarrassed and don't sweat it. There's probably some good in this if it made you enjoy it more than any other film this year

That said, I still haven't watched this

Might be the worst movie I saw this year next to Alien Covenant but to each their own

it was that movie that finally made me go, 'okay i guess im an aronovsky guy'. It's the most memorable movie i saw all year, the movie that had me engaged throughout no problem, the movie that i had the most moments that i still remember, the movie had me have an array of emotions throughout, the movie that had me confused throughout... it was different, unique, obviously great acting all around. Humor.

While I really liked 3 Billboards and Lady Bird, both of those movies were simliar to things ive seen in the past. They're great versions of said movies, but, nonetheless, they weren't movies that made me go "WOW". Maybe 3 billboards will become a Quentin type movie that the more and more i watch it, the more i pickup on a lot of the nuances...same with lady bird...but at face value, one viewing... i'll go for the movie that took a chance.

    *Get out is #2.
