She's great and her album is great. I am just very confused why she was the artist that all of this site chose to jump on so rabidly. Brand New covering her?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I found her music long before Jesse covered her. I also don't think people have gravitated to her any more rabidly than they have for bands like The Hotelier or Foxing.

nah the hype was loooong before the brand new hype. it's not just this site too, she's blown up critically

she's young, was on a label that had the push to the punk kids, lots of other smaller bands people like were talking about her, it's sad music. seems to appeal to lots of the people on here

I get the appeal for sure and I'm actually looking forward to the new album because I really enjoyed the single but I do wish the instrumentation was more dynamic

  5. I don't dislike Julien Baker and I respect her role in our scene and in music in general, but sonically Sprained Ankle is just too one-note for me. There's just nothing outside of the lyrics that differentiates one track from another. It showed a ton of potential though and I hope she throws some dynamic curveballs our way with the next one

See, I know I’ve listened to Sprained Ankle probably over 100 times, but I think one of the strengths of the album is that the songs all manage to have their own identity while still existing within the same sonic space. Blacktop is unique from the title track which is unique from Everybody Does which is unique from Something, etc. I’ve never thought that it all blends together or anything like that.

This is all being said, no one is going to like everything and that’s fine. I do hope everyone on the fence gives Turn Out The Lights a chance when it comes out because I think it will be very special, but if she’s not your thing she’s not your thing.

Sprained Ankle is good, I definitely see the “one note” criticism though. New song is v good too

  8. I understand thinking Sprained Ankle is “one-note” but I also appreciate that it’s such a short record for that reason. Paints a minimal sonic landscape and doesn’t wear out its welcome for me.

I think it’s one of the best 50 records of the past 5 years or so.

oh yeah it’s a good record definitely but it’s also definitely a debut and something she’ll work off of and hopefully surpass

Our Love to Admire might be better than both of them.

Julien Baker is one note but it's a great note. And yeah, like Shit said, it's a debut and she's young.

This definitely isn't unpopular on this website, but after having a few music conversations with my girlfriend's family I'm fucking tired of people that think any music that came after the 90s is bad

Ugh. Yes. I saw someone post the other day how “rock music is dead.” It’s like, no, you’re just lazy.

so many good and bad hot takes. i love it.

i'll bite with the thrice hot takes though - the band hasn't topped vheissu with anything they've released since then. there's been some good individual songs since then, but nothing else as cohesive as a whole since then.

They have always been boring to me. I maybe enjoyed two songs off of Artist in the Ambulance, but everything else has just been snooze-worthy.

Alchemy Index is the best to me but I also haven't listened to a full Thrice album in about 3-4 years so what do I know
