    Little behind the song-

I wrote Rings True last May as a song as day challenge after my old band fell apart. I think originally I was going for a similar vocal effect to what MeWithoutYou uses on Pale Horses.

Balance is about philosophy/mental health but I wrote the lyrics during an acid trip. It's about trying to remain "whole". But also questioning what it means to be whole to begin with.

    Behind my songs

Out of My System: written and recorded pretty much exactly a year ago. I needed a closer for my album so I based it around a riff I had floating around for years. It has a cool trumpet sound at the end, this and the following song were made with @sophos34

Look In Your Eyes: I told Jake I wanted to make a song with a ton of 8-bit inspiration and we completed the song in probably an hour or so? Catchy as shit

Emo: this is from my first EP. It was always the least known song so I wanted to give it a little extra life on this compilation. I love the guitar/bass parts I came up with for it

    About mine and @alexmelton's songs:

    (01) All Your Faults- This is the first song on our EP, and the first we wrote as a band. Alex and I met up in my bedroom to figure out if we wanted to/could write songs together. We each suggested chords and different rhythms that ended up making the main synth part that kicks off the song, as well as the drum groove/lead synth. If I recall correctly, we were essentially finishing each other's sentences musically so to speak, it was a really cool collaboration. It was a new venture for me in particular, I had only ever played drums in bands, never composing chords at the ground floor. Alex was already well versed in tracking and writing, so I was able to learn from him quite a bit as we were writing/recording the EP. The song itself came together rather quick structurally, figuring out the sounds and textures was a little more difficult, but fun all the same.

Vocally, this was Kayla (who is my wife)'s first band and this is first song she had written. She does these little quips with her vocals that remind me of DCFC. Generally speaking lyrically, she likes taking idioms and coming at them from a different angle. So in stead of "this is 'all your fault'" sort of thing, she made the song about how a person is more than their "faults".

    (36) Plans- We wrote this one a couple months into the band. It started with the keys part at the beginning on an old Juno synth of mine. I brought it to the studio and Alex and I framed it out structurally together. In particular, he added a guitar part on the last chorus that I love. Kayla had come up with the bass part at the beginning of the track that I really dig, felt super groovy. Lyrically, the song stems from an accident that Kayla and I had gotten in. I think she took the idea of having all these ideas and plans and wants in life, but ultimately not having control over things/people that can come along and fuck that up.

Thanks to @bradsonemanband for putting this together and including us. Songs I've listened to so far have been really great, lots of talent on this site!

Related note, our new EP is being mixed now, of course like any band does we feel like it's an improvement to what we did on the first EP. I'll be sure to post in the self-promotion thread when released for anyone who may be interested.

both my songs were self recorded intermittently over late nights and early mornings, some context for them

    18. Field - is a song about the restrictiveness of time's linear passage, the experience of having to repeatedly drive movement in yourself, and how both those things lead to circling around sometimes. It's kinda funny because I started writing it in Los Angeles before applying to grad programs and finished it more than half a year later on the other side of the country. It also references several exceptional people who meant a lot to me at some point in time and still do but when they were reaching out a lot I wasn't yet at the point where we could connect on balanced ground, and now that I think I am they have long since grown into different people and we're not on familiar terms. anyway I'm really proud of how the bridge builds up lol.

(it's also supposed to end with the line "I'm sorry for all the love left undone/some recipients grew into new ones/others shot up just too much" but I was too lazy to record an acoustic outro)

    31. Infinite Bedsheets - I wrote and recorded this song in like three days last winter. It's about some of my favorite things, like spherical cows and imagination and this person I was crushing on.

Will be bumping this comp all today while I study :~)

I'm gonna post my thoughts as I go on this one. Six tracks in and it's all good so far.

Your Faults @bodkins & @alexmelton - I get strong PVRIS vibes from opening track. I love it!
Existence @bradsonemanband & @CSWAPPO - A nice heavy track to get things moving! The guitar tones are excellent and the screams kill it too.
American Graffiti @troyplaysbass - I really dig the sax added in. It meshes well with the clean/light guitars throughout the song.
Hear The Sound @teebs41 - I love the quite guitar in the bridge and outro. I'm a sucker for those quite moments after big choruses.
Naked In Blood @Damien Davies - This song makes me sad, but in a good way haha. I really like the lyrics. Excellent stuff here.

Watch The Skies @hermanthehermit - Beautiful song. The way it builds, getting a little louder and more layered with each repetition of the chorus is fantastic.
Waves @Mr. Serotonin - Holy hell, this is catchy! I'm gonna have this stuck in my head for a while. I can definitely see myself spinning this in my car with the windows down. Well done.
Rings True @Jesse West - I love the simplicity with the organ and acoustic guitar and then how it starts to get a little strained and jarring in the last few seconds.
Grave Dance @JakeRabin - A good old fashion punk banger. Had my foot tapping and head banging the whole way.
The New You @bradsonemanband - You always have great pop punk style covers which feel like a fresh take on the song, so it's awesome to hear the same sound in an original composition. This is good stuff, keep it up.
Pig @Pseudo! - Very cool atmospheric tones, especially with that guitar in the background during the verses. The tones work real well with the repetition of "I know you" chorus.
Volumes & Tomes @Common Conversation - Had me hooked right away with that fast piano.
Life in the Rearview Mirror - @Craig Manning - You've got a great story telling style in your lyrics. As someone who has moved around a lot, I could definitely picture every time I'd packed up and hit the road to a new home while listening to this song.
Stray Therapy @trevorshmevor - The intro reminds me a lot of the Wonder Years and then it kind of transitions into a faster paced Hotelier-esque feel. Good job.
Out Of My System @ComedownMachine - The dynamic between the chords and the drum beat in the verse is awesome. I like the melody in the chorus as well.

  16. @bodkins @alexmelton All Your Faults - very catchy! Well produced, I really love the singer's voice too! She hits those highs in the chorus flawlessly. Love how it feels like it's gonna be straight up 4 on the floor for the chorus but it kinda switches it up a bit.

@bradsonemanband Existence - had heard this one before, solid track! Like
Someone said earlier, has a very nostalgic feel to it. That lead in the verse takes me right back to high school. The whole song is very Saosin. Hard to recreate that sound without sounding cheesy and you guys nailed it!

@troyplaysbass American Graffiti - did not expect a track like this at all! The keys and sax are so awesome! Very tight rhythm section as well, which I'm assuming by your username you're probably a key part of! Singer's voice is great too, you can really hear the emotion in his voice.

@teebs41 Hear The Sound - buddy, this is great! That little break after the minute mark is such a cool moment! Really great guitar work all around. Still so jealous you got to work with Nathan Hussey for this stuff!

@Damien Davies Naked In Blood - bringing the sadness! Love it. Very straightforward acoustic track driven by the lyrics, which is awesome!

@hermanthehermit Watch The Skies - dude has anyone ever told you you sound like Ryan from Yellowcard? Your voice reminds me so much of his. Even some of the melodies you use too! Really like the vocal doubling on this too -- adds a cool layer effect and when paired with the soft synths, really helps elevate a simple acoustic tune! Seriously though, are you Ryan Key?? Hahah

@Mr. Serotonin Waves - Like everyone else said, this is smooth af the production is awesome! Looove the guitar tones you got, they work really well with a track like this. Are you singing here?

Thank you! Yeah, that's me singing. We used a chorus pedal for the guitar i believe, and then put some synths behind it to make it sound like that.

    I'm tired.

I'll give an explanation for my songs here:

Grave Dance - Just a fun horror punk song I wrote for this band. I cam up with the chorus in high school and held onto it for a few years before finishing it.

Heroes & Idols - I'm not secretive about my depression. It's hard to cope with but music is a main factor into helping me. I wrote this song at a very dark time in my life, and was this recorded the day after my dog died. I don't have a full version done yet, but I want it to be big.

Pass - So this was a song by an old band I was in called Crazy Generation. This is the unfinished song. The music originally was just acoustic for the first verse before turning punk for the rest of the song. The singer/bassist of that band, Mikey, was hit by a drunk driver. This April was the 5th anniversary of his death. The first verse was all he wrote of this song, which was originally supposed to be a break-up song. I sat down with his brother, Cory, and finished it with him. He doesn't perform on it, but he deserves as much credit as myself and Mikey.

    Since people are doing this

Hear the sound- I wanted to do my take on the early 2003 drive thru records sound. The bridge and outro is this classical guitar riff I came up with right before actually recording my guitar parts for the song. The lyrics are about our band getting back together after breaking up 10 years ago in college.

The consequence- one of the first songs written for the ep. the song was originally very slow and moody but it went through many changes. Tells the story of a girl who is abused by her family and one day she snaps and buries them alive. The idea of it is your actions have consequences and the way you treat people have consequences.
