Without getting too political, is the only reason Ireland and Northern Ireland are separate teams because NI is a part of the UK? Or are there historical ethnic difference between the two parts of the Ireland like how England, Wales, and Scotland are on that island?

Also cause I’ve never really thought to look it up, if anyone knows, why doesn’t Catalonia and the Basque Country field separate teams from Spain if Wales/NI/Scotland can field separate teams from England?

 

I don't think Catalonia or the Basque Country are recognised as countries in the same way as Wales and Scotland. Wales and Scotland are part of Britain, but not England. Catalonia and the Basque region are still Spain. I think?

 

the only major ethnic differences are the ethnically british unionists in the north, who are the descendants of planters given the land by the british crown but yeah the only reason they have a separate team is that they have their insane little "country" but people from the north can declare for the republic anyway
