A lot of TLC. We got very lucky that he was okay with other cats, and my two were basically still babies when he came in and he kinda took care of them and it was adorable... but he was awful with humans. The thing I started doing that made a big difference was just lying on my stomach on the floor on his level and laying there for 15 minutes as he slowly approached me. A couple of weeks of that and we started picking him up/holding him. I've got a bunch of little scars on my chest/belly from him going apeshit from it. Then he would start nuzzling, but he'd go from happy to done as fuck in a millisecond and go for the face. I'd say it took 6 months before we were comfortable letting him out around strangers, and he still has a bit of a mean streak when it comes to kids.

That sounds crazy! Glad it's worked out though!

We have one that runs and hides from people especially my son but she also hisses at our other 2 occasionally for various/no reason

My mom got a new kitten a couple of months ago (Serena, on the left, 4-5 months). She and Terry (about a year and a half old) are now best friends, they're practically inseparable.

Anyone have any experience Samoyeds? I really need a hypoallergenic dog because I'm allergic to most breeds and Samoyeds are my favorite of hypoallergenic ones. does anyone know their temperament, how much space they need and if you can train them not to bark constantly I live in an apartment and I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that lol. I'm also wondering if a 1300 sq ft apt would be too small.

I love Samoyeds. I’ve only had brief interactions with them but they have always been incredible.

A samoyed (or a shoob as I like to call them) lives in my neighborhood and I want to pet that dog so bad.

  16. So, if you don't mind me putting the attention on me for a minute (I hate this too)... my family dog has lymphoma and kidney failure and apparently doesn't have much time left. I'm an absolute wreck thinking about it. He's 12.5 and we got him to "replace" me once I left for college. The most gentle giant I have ever known and all he wanted was to be loved. He would block your path when you got home just to be petted. If you had your hand down on the couch, he would slip his head underneath it. As someone who rented dog books from the library when I was a kid, and to finally have one, this hurts more than I could have imagined. I hope Toby can be a miracle story and can be around for a few more years.

I don't know how to deal with this.

Man, I’m so sorry. What kind of dog is he? And do you live close by?

  18. Thanks, I appreciate it. He's a golden retriever... I live 20 mins away, so I'll be visiting a lot over the next couple weeks. I just feel so bad because there's not really anything I can do. I laid with him and petted him while I was there today, but he wouldn't eat any treats that I tried to give him. Very depressing.

Damn. Yeah, there’s not much to say, but I am sorry. At least he won’t have to suffer anymore I suppose, if there’s any sort of positivity....

This isn’t the exact same situation but for the last seven years or so I’ve been dog sitting one of my good friend’s dogs to the point where they basically my own to some degree, I certainly loved them as if they were my own. Anyways, last year the one I was closest to, Zoe, she was pretty old and was diagnosed with cancer. It hit really fast and we knew she didn’t have long. I went over the day before they put her down to say my goodbyes and when I got there she was in so much pain. Despite her pain and heavy medication, she managed to drag herself over to me with her barely wagging tail and lick my face and rest her head on my laid and I just sat there with her for a good while. I don’t mean to make this about me, but my point is that I truly believe that dogs have a very strong sense of what love is, and I’m positive that Toby, even in his bad health, hasn’t forgotten you and loves you very much and perhaps there is some comfort in that. I know to some people it’s “just a dog” but it is so much more than that, it is a true friendship, and I am very sorry.

So sorry to read this. I think @Bloodsucker II kind of covered everything, but my brother had to put down one of his dogs in 2016 and even though I saw her maybe once every other week at most, it was gut-wrenching. Really no words to give besides condolences that you have to go through that.
