I agree that it influenced things insofar as the way movies were made/distributed, but I think what @ComedownMachine is saying is that it never permeated pop culture in the same way that something like LOTR or Harry Potter did. It didn’t really affect “nerd culture” I don’t think.

 

Or even Cameron's previous movies. Aliens, The Terminator, and Titanic are much more likely to be referenced than Avatar in 2017.

 

Yeah that's why I meant. I don't really think it has a fandom that's dying for a sequel which is strange for how massive it was at the time

 

Pop culture impact and story/iconography influence definitely did not make a dent for how much money it made

 

Random but I just realized what your avatar was. For as much as I enjoyed that movie, I completely forgot it came out this year. I should give that a rewatch. That whole sequence in the hotel in the third act was very chilling.

 

Twenty years from now people will Google the highest grossing film of all time and be like "What's that?" the same way people will Google the lowest grossing film of all time and be like "What's that?"

Assuming Avatar is still the highest grossing film of all time twenty years from now, I mean. Maybe Avatwo will top it

 

I thought it was The Force Awakens, at least for domestic

 

Not going out on a limb here but they're going to market the fuck out of those movies

 

It'll be so rad to see these movies not gross nearly as much as the first Avatar and basically prove that it was a fluke

 

Dunno where to post this, but the ending to Before Sunset is honestly perfect. It’s been years since I’ve seen it but that scene sticks with me and just pops in my head from time to time.
