I assumed Villenueva was permitted to stand outside. His veteran status is pretty much known and he is a well respected teammate. So I'd imagine that he was allowed to do so

  9. I do find some of these owners being hypocrites uniting on the field with the players. Shad Khan in particular.

Yeah, it's especially hypocritical because Kaepernick is still unemployed.

  11. Yup. Especially since these owners put money into the Trump campaign. It never occurred to me today until I was listening to Rob Parker talk about it.

  12. The owners' involvement yesterday was complete performance art.

People can be supporters/fans of Trump and still be upset by his comments.

It sounds a lot like it was supposed to be 100% participation, but, that the vote among players to not participate was pretty evenly split. None really sound mad about him going out there, but Tomlins comments werent particularly happy.

Steelers surprised by Villanueva's decision to take field for national anthem

The Eric Reid column on the genesis of kneeling is a good read. I dont remember the thought process behind kneeling being covered this well a year ago

After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former N.F.L. player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, the next day during the anthem as a peaceful protest. We chose to kneel because it’s a respectful gesture. I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy.

    The rivalry is back on

In the case of the owners, I think it's different since Kaepernick is unemployed largely, if not entirely, because of his protests. The owners more or less carried out what Trump said in his statements, but then banded with the players when Trump actually verbalized it.

Always do the right thing. Supporter

Anyone who voted for/supported/donated to Trump but is offended now is a hypocrite. This is a pattern and it's been who he is his entire life, there's no excuse for being surprised or upset now as opposed to any point over the course of the last 40 years of his being a despicable monster of a human being who has bumbled and fucked up and actively chosen to make the world worse with every single thing he does. Khan and Brady and all of them can eat shit until they do more than palatable linking arms on a football field.
