Was originally leaning 451, but as someone else pointed out, the key change bugs me. I almost always find key changes on the final chorus to be uninteresting and lazy. I love the rest of the song, though, which made it tough.

While Same Logic is a contender for one of their best songs, so is 137. That bomb of a solo Vin drops out of nowhere continues to blow me away, followed by that final chorus that could fill an arena. Brian's percussion on that song also make it a highlight.

Crazy that Desert is getting crush by Lit Me Up. My favorite song is losing to my least favorite song lol

451- This was an early highlight for me upon my first few listens of the album, probably mostly because it kind of shocked me. On an album full of songs I didn't ever really expect to hear from this band, this probably takes the cake as the most surprising of them all. That said, it's definitely been surpassed by a few other songs in my favorites list, but I still really like it. I've seen a few people knock the key change here, but I think it's super effective in this context tbh. It's not really something the band has tackled much (if at all?) in the past, and that's why it works as such a cool dynamic to the song. It's one of my favorite moments on the album, and I don't think I'd like the song nearly as much if it just returned to the chorus in the same key; something absolutely needed to happen there to make it stand out and I'm glad they realized it and went for it. Batter Up has yet to fully click with me, though it has grown on me with each listen, and I feel it's a fitting closer to the record.
In The Water- Could Never Be Heaven is great, but In The Water is a contender for my favorite song on the album (along with my next two picks). Just a masterful song all around. It's one of my favorites on the album both melodically and lyrically, and Vin's solo here is another album highlight– it's just so perfectly executed. I love how varied the instrumentation is on it too, they really stepped out of their comfort zone in that regard, I never thought I'd hear harmonica in a Brand New song tbh. The verses make me feel like I'm in some swamp in the south or something. That probably sounds dumb but whatever lol.
137- Uh, yeah, I already said it but I'm beyond disappointed, and honestly a little shocked, to see that Same Logic beat this by an absolute landslide. I really do like that song, to be fair, but I really don't think it's to the level of 137. 137's a pretty staggeringly impressive showing of their ability to capture a mood fitting to the themes of the song– the song just feels apocalyptic, atmospherically speaking, its chilling. I know I've seen a few people knock the chorus lyrics to this song, but I think they're effective... I can see why someone would feel they're insensitive, and I don't think I can really make the call as to whether or not they're problematic, but I do get what they were going for and think it works purely in the sense that it points out the absurdity of taking nuclear warfare lightly. It's an extremely sardonic take on our willingness to repeat history, no matter how awful it is. I hope I'm making sense here. Anyway, back to the song itself, that build to the solo is incredible and then the solo itself comes in and, honestly, could be my favorite moment in any Brand New song period. I kind of see it as this album's "Luca Bomb," in a way; it doesn't quite have the jump-factor of it, but I think it still manages to compete, in terms of intensity, all the same.
Lit Me Up- Incredibly easy choice for me. I think Desert is a good song, but it's one of my least favorites on the album. If I'm being honest, I think it's really awesome musically, but I still haven't quite come around to it lyrically. Even viewing it sardonically, like 137, I don't think it's done as gracefully or effectively. Like, idk, I can't really articulate why I don't think it works quite as well, and maybe I'm biased against it being a queer trans person, but I kinda wish they'd tackled it differently. Like, I think someone who holds these views could realistically listen to this song and not get that it's mocking their hypocrisy. idk. But anyway, Lit Me Up from first listen was one of my absolute favorites, and that hasn't changed at all. It gives me chills, and is another example of them setting a perfect mood for the song's themes imo. It sounds so dark and menacing, and yet the choruses manage to be catchy despite that? And it all works somehow? Incredible. I got chills throughout the song the first time I heard it, some of my favorite lyrics Jesse has ever written, easily.

Again, sorry for the length. I feel like maybe these are a little less substantial than what I wrote for Daisy songs, but idk. Right now this and Daisy are my favorite Brand New albums and I felt like writing about these songs. Though, I will say, this round was easier than any Daisy round.

Blasphemy in a Brand New thread. Especially from such a boring album when we are discussing this amazing piece of work.

    ....well, in my opinion:
    Tidal Wave> Science Fiction
