  1. SE will probably get a speed bump later this year / early next year. Like the first time, off cycle.

I think I saw a few people bummed about the screen size on the X? It's the largest iPhone display:

    iPhone X - 5.8"
    iPhone 8 Plus - 5.5"
    iPhone 8 - 4.7"

AppleCare on the X is $199. Yeesh. At least you get it free with the Upgrade Program.

More I think about it, 8 will be fine for me. Even might spring for the 8 Plus for the camera but I'd have to play more with an existing 7S in stores to see if I can stomach a phone that big.

It isn't free. The $199 is just split between the 24 monthly payments.

So is the camera better in the 8+ versus the X? I missed that earlier. Which has better photo/video capabilities is the deciding factor for me.

I think the new 8+ plus all of the goings on in the world today are going to mark my switch from Android to iPhone. I already have a MacBook, so staying in the ecosystem is appealing. And upgrading from a 32gb phone to a 256gb phone just seems unreal.

  11. Apple Releases iTunes 12.7 With Major Changes, Including No Built-In App Store
In a day filled with surprises, Apple has shocked us once again with the release of iTunes 12.7, which entirely revamps the iTunes App. The new iTunes is designed to focus solely on music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks, which means there is no built-in App Store. [...]

The new iTunes focuses on music, movies, TV shows, and audiobooks. It adds support for syncing iOS 11 devices and includes new features for--

Apple Music. Now discover music with friends. Members can create profiles and follow each other to see music they are listening to and any playlists they've shared.

Podcasts. iTunes U collections are now part of the Apple Podcasts family. Search and explore free educational content produced by leading schools, universities, museums, and cultural institutions all in one place.

If you previously used iTunes to sync apps or ringtones on your iOS device, use the new App Store or Sounds Settings on iOS to redownload them without your Mac.

I'm trying to decide if I want to go back to limited storage space with that. Or if I wanna stay above 100 gbs and go with the 8+. I mean I'm only using 44gbs on my 7+ so it wouldn't be bad going to 64....

  15. A Unique Marketing Problem for Apple
If you read this site, then you know what Apple announced about the iPhone 8 and X models. But did you catch how they described the cameras? With the standard and plus model iPhones, it’s always been a “yeah the Plus has a bigger camera”, which allows us to do something like: optical image stabilization, and then later, dual cameras. Apple always side stepped the which camera is better debate, by not saying one was better than the other, but rather that since one was larger they could add more features. But the truth was always that the Plus had the objectively, and subjectively, better camera. Hands down.

With the X, there’s an issue. It’s size is between the two devices, and it is being launched just a month after the iPhone 8 models — which are “top of the line”. So Apple can’t really say: it’s the most amazing camera ever, and they also can’t say “well because of the size it has more features”. Hell they really can’t even say that because of the price it has more features.

As far as I can tell the rear facing cameras are notably better on the iPhone X, with two important offerings:
    • The telephoto lens now has a max aperture of 2.4 instead of 2.8 on the iPhone 8 Plus. While numerically minor, this should play out to be hugely beneficial in both low light, and also in providing shallower looks to the images.
    • Both cameras on the iPhone X have optical image stabilization, whereas (as far as I can tell), only the wide angle lens on the iPhone 8 models have this. And if you recall using an iPhone without this, this is important. Could this mean Portrait Mode also gains optical image stabilization? I don’t know, but it would be awesome if it did.

Ugh. It's only $10 more p/month to get the 256gb X over the 8+. That's like 60% of one meal eating out here. Worth it?

Do people actually browse safari in landscape on their phone anyways?

  20. Based on my research of my websites, hardly ever, but that's definitely the right way to render the site on the X. No way you'd wanna expand it all the way out. I'd probably grab the dominate color of the background though, but maybe that doesn't work.

I think I'm in the same boat. I have a DSLR I use for most important things, but it's tough to pass up a better quality camera (1 f-stop aperture, added stabilization, etc) when the cost is small comparatively.

    Edit: department of redundancy department

Is $199 really worth it for AppleCare+ for the iPhone X?

I figure a screen replacement if cracked comes out to around $140ish. For me to get any savings from AppleCare, I would need two separate broken screens, which I find unlikely.

    Any thoughts/experiences are appreciated.
