I know that's not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but as someone in a baby band struggling just to get folks to give us a listen... man. "Only 89k views" hurts, since it's this kind of trash getting those views to begin with.

 

Neck Deep and Moose Blood are two of the biggest names in pop punk right now. Bands like Attila and Emmure and Falling In Reverse do just fine in the Warped Tour scene. People are very willing to forgive these things, it seems to me.

Stuff like this makes me that much more mystified about how hard it is to get people to listen to...anything.

 

There's way more backlash for this stuff. Look at that Makeout dude's twitter, he's getting it handed to him. That's an improvement from how this scene used to be. I bet these dudes end up being a flash in the pan.

 

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that in addition to the misogyny rhyming Sephora and tour is egregious and should get them arrested as is

Then there's the added offense of a white guy using "becky" as an insult as though that's even remotely above board

i listen to hip-hop with horrible lyrics. you can be critical of things and still engage with them and find enjoyment in other aspects while recognizing and calling out the things that deserve to be called out. (thats just about lyrics, not bands with abusers in them).

 

It's still an issue that has a long way to go. But it's just not nearly as present compared to when Brand New, TBS, CIWWAF, Mayday Parade, PATD, and Fall Out Boy spent half their albums ragging on their exes.

 

the reason songs and bands like this even exist and make these songs are because in the mainstream outlets, these types of songs were never really criticized and actually looked at favorably. Sure they had critics but most people mindlessly sing along not really thinking about what they are saying. I mean a song called "smack my bitch up" was a big hit in the 90s. I think the difference is that back then people "enjoyed" it for the shock value but there's really no place for this now and there never should have been but unfortunately there was. We can always improve

 

Attila was pretty popular with that song "About That Life" which had some of the more repulsive lyrics I've ever heard.

 

the good news is if youll notice hardly any of the bands referenced from the early 00s write like that anymore. makes me at least somewhat optimistic that new bands that come along with this kind of stuff will learn and grow and not keep doing it if they want to be taken seriously and have a lasting career. as long as fans hold them accountable.

Because there is a global epidemic, perpetrated throughout history, of women being subjected to violence at the hands of men.

This language reflects and reinforces that history and ensures it continues.

 

Serious question that this topic has me thinking on actually. A lot of the bands from the early 2000's were not called out in the same regards back then as they have been within the passed few years about those types of songs and themes. Does the immediate attention these newer bands such as Makeout get for this sort of lyrical content take away a certain organic growth and development that bands of the past had undergone but bands of this generation are unable to undergo because of the immediate backlash to writing in this way? Yes you can be a great artist without every really writing in this manner from the start, and I'm not saying this stage of a bands career is ever necessary. Your post just had me thinking about the changes in this scene (seen and unseen) over the past two decades

 

"Dick" would be an derogatory male option if you were to have that conversation, but that is all that should be said, as it not only distracts from the primary discussion here but is also nowhere near as biting of a connotation in nature.

 

Thats true and I didn't say you couldn't. I was just saying this is not likely to stop this band from gaining popularity.
I guess MB/ND are a separate issue as it's not their lyrics but themselves that are the problem.

 

i dont think it takes away an organic growth, i think it speeds up a growth that should have already happened

 

The singer from this band has like a top-five all-time punchable face.

 

I think, rather than halt any natural development of learning how harmful their sexist approach can be, it puts these bands in a position to immediately address what direction they're going to go instead of prolonging the time they can coast on their garbage beliefs. It can either accelerate their growth (like @sophos34 said as I was typing cuz he's on point) or show their true colors early and how they REALLY view what they're talking about, and give us an opportunity to use our voices to silence theirs.
