Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

Garrett is kind of an unsung bass hero in this scene. Really tasty basslines all over their catalogue.

Me. I just find it super cheesy and it is not the part of BN I enjoy. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying I hate it haha.

Obviously he's not technically proficient or anything like that, but for what Brand New does, he's got the perfect style and his melodic runs are pretty tasteful. Not too much, not too little.

Haha I didn't mean it, I was just making a joke about everyone's favorite user from the album thread (blakebeats). He was arguing the other day that the bassist and drummer of a band are usually easily replaceable.

    100% true
i would say this used to be true til post deja and even then it seemed like he could always find the perfect bassline for a song. after that he def got waaaaay better but on record his playing is kind of understated (imo)

wtf really? the rhythm section is what makes a good band an excellent band or a good band into a terrible one. it is essential. thank god i gave up on that thread

Haha in his defense I think the point he was making was they're easier to replace than a singer which is probably true, at least in terms of how people will view the band going forward, but as usual he just used horrible reasoning. But yea you're absolutely correct - both are massively important to any good band.

replacing a vocalist is hard given how often they are the primary songwriter and how often people attach the band's identity to them -- like, i can't imagine listening to Modest Mouse if they kicked out Isaac Brock (lmao) or even in a more collaborative band like MWY or something, but I also would be extremely destroyed if MWY lost Ricky

If Blink lost Travis I would be destroyed lol

Everyone but the lead guitarist and vocalist is replaceable. Didn't you catch that memo this weekend?

Oh haha gotcha, I missed that argument. As I've grown older I've become more fond of listening to what the bassist is doing and cool, subtle lines that aren't flashy but they keep the song and melody moving.

It was a temporary thing, and sure it went well, but I'd be upset if he left.

/coming from a guy who said the same thing when Tom left and is now 110% on board with him not being there

What Greg said. With Mark still there, it's still the same entity. If Mark left it wouldn't be.

I appreciate when a band can lose a chief member, find a person to (mostly) take their place, adjust their approach and stil put out quality material. Case in point: The Receiving End of Sirens. As rough as it was for them to lose Casey, The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi is a brilliant album.

I can respect that. Hence why I was able to love California even with no Tom, or when TBS lost...its circulation of back up vocalists...not quite the same as you said but I dig it

Did you ever get into The Receiving End of Sirens? Great stuff. I can't be mad that they're not around anymore though because we got The Dear Hunter out of it

I never did actually, but I should check them out. Truth be told I regrettably admit I'm one of those people that has like, 15-20 mainstay bands and listens to all of their new stuff and follows them but doesn't go out of his way to find new bands as much as he should. I have to usually just happenchance hear a song by a new band(like my fiancé has her pandora on or something) and I hear the song and like it enough to look them up. I'll give these guys a shot though when I get a chance.

Edit: when I say new band I don't Mean new to music. I mean new to me

Yea exactly. For a band's identity, the singer can be the most difficult to replace, but in terms of the band's actually sound, it can be just as devastating to lose any member and you can't just replace that member with any studio bass player or drummer and expect everything to sound the same.
