some distortion is especially if recording through analog equipment. but the entire track being brick walled and clipping in the mastering stage makes some ugly crackling sounds come through when it overloads.

    just look at this waveform

when the track kicks in you can hear some ugly distortion

olg, anhedonia, and only every time are like the only mcternan records with any depth to them. juturna is almost there. but like, my biggest example of my problem with him is separation by balance and composure. it took me forever to realize they had three guitarists because on separation it literally sounds like theres one guitarist most of the time. its a very flat mix

Firework's Gospel is pretty great. OCL too.

i didnt know he did those. OCL is way better sounding but its not what id call great. its servicable to the band but doesnt make or break the record. hes done albums where his production is fine, much like yip was to me for the longest time, but i (seeing as im an engineer/producer myself) like producers who really add another element to the records they work on instead of just being fine, for the most part. but some records i just dont like his sound which is worse than just being fine. idk. lots of producers in the scene are hit or miss. like i hate the guy who does the wonder years' stuff work on their albums, but all the albums hes done for dillinger escape plan are fucking great.

one of yips problems for the longest time was the bands he worked with didnt have great guitar or drum tones to begin with so a lot of his stuff just sounded dull and muddy. but as the bands he worked with got better and as he started working with better bands, his production got better. he still has some misses but id say rooms of the house, keep you, violent waves, spin, pixie queen, light we made, hyperview, and quite a few more in recent years have good to great production.

I love the production of TGG and hate NCTH, which is weird since it was the same guy, but i think that's because they wanted to go noticeably more raw and something went awry in the mastering for that record.

upsides has bad production, suburbia is pretty good, tgg is neither here or there, NCTH is the worst of all. i just dk what he/they were thinking.

Nick explained in the TWY thread that they were so exhausted by the end of that they just wanted to get it out there. There were some obvious parts that they didn't like, but they were too deep in the process to really reverse course at that point though.

OLG is one of my favorite albums of all time but I think it might be their worst production-wise, to me. It's odd to hear people saying they prefer it over Juturna, bc to me they're very similar, except Juturna is a bit less muddy.

I can't even wrap my mind around how perfect both those records would've been if they were mixed by someone really good.

I should stop trying to post at work. I meant to say that I thought it was deliberately done on this album because it was like a sign they were on a major label. I actually even have a little experience in having distortion screw up a track haha. I hear it a bit on the frozen creek example, and I also hear the vocal clipping on songs like Get Out and Through the Desert, if I'm remembering correctly. What other noticeable moments are there.

There's times OLG sounds extremely good and others where you know they blew it. I can't tell which has the worst production tbh

OLG sounds fine, as does.... every other Circa record.

    (just my opinion)

Semi constructive criticism as whole is a pretty good example. The heavy parts just sound like a jumble of sounds. I think it sounds pretty fine when it quiets down though. Another one is the intro to In The Morning which sounds awesome as is, but again the second guitar just gets lost somewhere.

Hmmm interesting. I'll have to go back and pay careful attention. I've always enjoyed the production on OLG, but then again I don't know much haha. Only one that's truly bothered me is Violent Waves.

It's not as bad as the producer's other albums, it almost fits on OLG just falls flat at times.
But maaaaan Violent Waves is soooo good
