It took me a while too. I didn't start listening to them until 2011. Glad I did because they've released four or five fantastic albums

 

@blakebeats ever listen to Astral Weeks?????

I don't get people asking how to get into bands. You start from the beginning and go in order. If you don't like any of the albums then you don't like the band. If you like some or all of them then you do. It's simple.

 

It's my favorite album bar none, so get on that

 

The only artists I really know who I would compare them to is Does It Offend You, Yeah? and old school Finch

 

Some people can be put off if the first album they listen to by an artist is bad

 

Yeah like if someone tried to get into Brand New chronologically

 

If I listened to YFW and didn't have background knowledge about Brand New's progression, I wouldn't keep listening. Just one example.

Hate to say it, but I gotta agree with BB on this one. If I had heard YFW first, I would have had a hard time giving the rest of Brand New's discography an honest listen...cause it sucks...YFW I mean....it's not good. It's not a good album.

I disagree personally but I agree with the point.

There's some bands for me like that.

 

I think the RIYL thing is stupid considering you can just go on Youtube to check a song or two out from an artist, but I definitely wouldn't recommend somebody start with some artists' first albums, like Deftones.

 

*me having never heard Deftones before checking out a random song*

 

For some artists I've gone chronologically and it's worked perfectly fine (Radiohead, Circa Survive) but for others it can be best to hear the album that's most representative of the artist as a whole. It's not that hard to understand.

 

I always look into the history of a band if I'm trying to get into them

 

All jokes aside, if I met someone who had never listened to Brand New before I'd probably recommend that they listen to Science Fiction first as I feel that it's a solid culmination of all their past efforts.

 

imo it's very important to understand a bands progression if you want to get into them

 

Some of the references on it would be way better if they knew what it was referencing beforehand though

 

If I had tried to get into Jimmy Eat World chronologically, there's zero chance I would've gotten past that self titled thing and Static Prevails.
