In other areas (Reddit) I'm reading some criticism on the lyrics of Science Fiction and wanted to see what everyone here thought and share how I've always viewed this band's narrative across their 4 now 5 albums. Since Science Fiction it's allowed me to dive back into each album and go more in depth. Even though I've heard them all a million times there's something different as I look back on them with this new album.

I feel like the lyrics were one of the consistent things across all of the records - that's what stood out in YFW instead of keeping it a standard pop-punk record. While it's obviously not the peak in terms of their songwriting ability as far as pop punk records go..it's up there with the best of them. Also- with The No Seatbelt Song give a good peak of what this band will explore more as they moved into Deja.

The lyrical progression into Deja absolutely made sense - the words are melodramatic, heartbroken and adolescent because that's what the band was at the time but allowed them to evolve more as a band. This record was pivotal in what displaying what the band was capable of, that they wouldn't continue to try and recapture the magic of their first record and take bold risks in their sound.

When the demos leaked. They made sense after Deja. They sound similar in tone and feel like a follow-up to Deja but more mature lyrically in content. The leaked demos are the logical next step and bridge the gap between Deja and Devil. I think any fan can agree that's where the biggest evolution happened with the band - not just in lyrics but in sound. The band of YFW, Deja and the leaked demos was hardly recognizable. They became larger than life and those themes were continued into Daisy which also has incredible lyrics even at its most simplistic. They continued their experimentation in sound and where they can take the band. This album catches a lot of flack because it didn't "live up" to Devil and God and didn't meet the expectations for some that they had set. I never understood the criticism as I loved that the band continued to try and experiment and create something they never had done before. It didn't have to"beat" Devil and God because it shouldn't have to.

I think Science Fiction has some of their best lyrics and imagery It's very self reflective. If you look at Mene and I Am A Nightmare, those two songs are some of my favorites and very similar to one another in energy but make little sense as a follow up to Daisy. I am interested to hear what comes out from those sessions and hear more of what the band was trying to write and scrapped - if I ever do. Science Fiction for me has that closure and finality that I wanted out of a 5th (and perhaps final) Brand New album. If this is truly the last album they put out I think it contains a lot of the themes that are consistent across the band's discography all while still having it's own narrative. The sound bites, the lyrics, the flow, the music - there's a lot to dissect here and feel I will be doing so as I did YFW, Deja, the leaked demos, Devil and God, Daisy and the two singles before this, for a very long time.

Forgive me for all this random thought (I'm an hour early for my dentist appointment with my headphones - haha) but I think what I love the most about Brand New is just how different these 5 albums and everything has been over the years. It's great to see a band so creative and dedicated to their craft and doing everything the way they want to. It's so rare. Glad I could witness it from day one to today.

Great post! I think SciFi is their best record lyrically and 99% of the lyrics are great to me so I will never stand the hate
